Re: Honda Cbr1100xx Blackbird

Ketje--hello from a newbie! Did you spray gloss onto the exhaust pipes after weathering with the Tamiya kit? If so, can I ask what gloss (can or airbrush, and which brand)? Love your work!

I only sprayed gloss varnish onto the muffler. I protected the weathering with teflon tape used for plumbing. This because I was a bit to fast with the weathering and I forgot to spray some gloss varnish on the CF.

OK. So nothing over the weathering powder? How is it smudge-wise (easy to smudge, hard?). Do you prefer weathering with the kit vs. spraying with All-Clad clear yellow and blue? Also, do you generally prefer All-Clad polished aluminum to chrome for exhaust pipes?

Hey, the weathering powder is very easy to use. You don' t have to use a lot of pressure, just put some powder on and rub lightly over the surface untill you are satisfied with the result.
This was the first time I used the weathering set. I prefer doing this with the airbrush, but it's a good replacement for it when you don't have enough time. It's less time consuming then using your airbrush.
About the Alclad, I like to use the polished aluminium instead of the chrome because it's less glossy. But others may prefer the chrome.
I hope this will help you.

By the way what are you building this moment?

Re: Honda Cbr1100xx Blackbird

Ketje. Thanks for the welcome! I'm a novice, to be sure. I only have 10 or so motorcycles (mainly motogp) in my pocket, completed over the last 2 years. I'm currently going back to 2 to re-work/detail them: the YZR Intercolor version and the '93 Movistar RCV. Nothing too exciting. I'm mainly looking to re-do the exhausts, CF all proper parts, and PE where I can. I also re-painted the cowlings over the summer. This summer, in fact, I painted (with TS's) a good number of cowlings in the kits on my shelf, since I live in the Chicago area and half the year is unsuitable for outside spraying. If you're interested I can post pics of the 2 bikes I'm reworking. After these I plan on starting either the '03 Pacific GP YZR (Studio 27) or the '94 YZR500 WGP (also Studio 27), which I'll definitely post for all the feedback I can get.

Thanks again for the interest! This is a GREAT forum!

BTW, please call me Mike.

Hey Mike,
why don't you post them in a new thread. That's also work in progress.

Re: Honda Cbr1100xx Blackbird update

I put on the front fork, brake lines and other small things.
The cowling is ready to put on. Pictures will follow in a few days.

Very nice! You're such a clean builder! The heat-staining looks well-done.
