Funny that, when I was in Melbourne a few months ago I could have sworn I drove past a factory at Fishermans bend called the "Holden engine manufacturning plant" funny that isn't it? The blocks for the V6 in the Alfa Romeo 159 and the Brera are made at *Gasp* Fishermans bend, surely just a coincedence? Stop being so ignorant.

I have seen countless Wheels magazine pictures of Holdens in the Middle East. In Saudi Arabia and Dubai, the Chevrolet Lumina (Aka Commodore) and Caprice (Aka Statesman) are very popular and highly regarded cars.

Back in 2002 Fiat went really deep into the red ink, GM took out a 10% shareholding, with an option to buy the company out, they recently chose not to and gave Fiat a cash settlement, but not before securing an engine deal with Alfa Romeo and Fiat donating the platform of the new Punto to underpin the new Opel Corsa.

Why show the cars in the Middle East? Well back in 1998/1999 when the export program began (I'm guessing you musta been about 7 back then?) Holdens export program to the Middle East was a huge deal for the Australian automotive industry, this was the first time an Australian car made it outside of Australia, New Zealand or Singapore since the disastrous Mazda Roadpacer of the 70's (Holden Premier with a 13B rotary) or the Falcons massive flop in South Africa in the 80's and 90's, so Wheels went over to Saudi/the UAE/Lebanon with Holden to visit the launches and generally give a perspective on what it meant for the Australian motor industry and it is still a huge deal with the Chevrolet Lumina and Caprice (As the Commodore and Statesman are known over there respectively) still acheiving very strong sales.

The "gook" company you speak of is GM-Daewoo, The Kalos has been bought in to replace the Barina, the Lacetti to slot below the premium-priced Astra and the new Evanda to replace the Vectra. In turn the Statesman will be sold in Korea under the Daewoo banner and also the Buick banner in China.

You know why Holden has managed to sell these cars all over the globe? Because people WANT them, there is clearly no demand for Falcons overseas because if there was there'd be more than just one export market (New Zealand, where the Mondeo now outsells the Falcon I think) for the car.
