Quick review - 2008 Grand Prix

Last night I picked up a new 2008 sedan. This is my 4th Prix, and the best yet. The engine is so quiet yet the power is there. The ride is solid, confident. The interior is also the best yet. Too bad this is the last year for the Grand Prix, they have been great cars, as the miles in my signature will attest!

I will be on the new car honeymoon for a while.

What motor is in your 2008? Is it still a 3.8? Or what are the new GM motors offered in the impala's? the 3.5 (3.1 platform right?) and 3.9 (is this based on a 3.8?)? I feel stupid for asking this, i usually try and stay up to date on these type of things. I heard that the 350 was going to be produced again for racing or was this just a rumor?

The engine is the 3800 Series III. Unbelievably refined!! Quiet, powerful, smooth.

Do the 08s look just like the 04-07 models? If not you should take a picture

It may be the end of the Grand Prix but in name only. The G8 is due out in 2008. It looks like the Series III 3800 will be history as far as in the Pontiac product line.

Looks like the Aussies built a 4-door Toyota Solara wannabee with retro hood scoops with limited options including outdated after-market parts tire rims. Anyone notice the Sports package with "Summer Only" tires? I definitely don't want to consider one of those Americanized spec'd out Aussie cars until they have a 2-3 year reliability track record. To explain "Americanized," I mean an Aussie G8 vehicle built with either OBD II (OBD III??) components that have been designed for their engines along with the long list of required spec's required by the US DOT.

I think GM missed a chance to come out with a GP that had its own look that could lead other manufacturers to mimic it for years and above all else, beat back globalization by building the car in the U.S. No wonder it's losing ground to the Japanese when it doesn't take bigger risks. Before long it will be the number 3 auto manufacturer in the states when the Chinese start exporting their cars over here.

My take on the G8...

I've owned 5 Grand Prix's, but am by no means an expert. The Prix's I've always owned have been an SE, or GTs. I've never owned a GXP. The GP customer is really twofold - the sportscar guy, or the family guy who wants a sporty car, like me.

With the G8, the family guys like me have been abandoned. The G8 is priced too high. The rear wheel drive makes it impractical for people like me also, snowbelt, etc.

Pontiac killed the Firebird off. They tried the GTO and that didn't work. So now it's the G8.

So where does the family-guy Grand Prix SE or even GT guy go? I have no idea. The G6 is too small, sorry.

Japanese perhaps.

If GM keeps this up then the Toyota and Nissan alternatives aren't looking too bad.

So I was looking around under the hood last night. There's no throttle cable. Heh heh, I'd read about the "drive by wire" thing a while back. It's pretty interesting. The throttle body, which used to have the throttle cable and about 4 different sensors, now has one large black electronic module, and that's it. Driving the car, you wouldn't notice a difference, I mean, it accellerates as you'd expect.

So today I learned that the 15" steel wheels I use for my snow tires WILL NOT fit the '08 GP, because of bigger brakes. So I started looking at some winter tire/wheel packages, and realized the tire pressure monitoring system won't work unless I have sensors in the winter wheels. That adds an additional $260 to the package for another set of sensors & associated hardware. Cha-ching! Just thought I'd mention this for anyone considering an '08.
