Talking 454 in a Chevette?

So some budies and I have aquired a chevette and now have a 454 to put into it... will this work? We know that 350's have been put in and all, but how much room is left? Major modifications to the body? Recommend for a tranny?

Re: 454 in a Chevette?

Major firewall and transmission tunnel modifications will be necessary. Hot Rod or Car Craft did a similar thing with a Caddy 500 which is only slightly larger than a 454 and they had to basically cut everything out and sit with their knees laying on the bellhousing. I would lean toward a TH350 simply because its smaller and might require less surgery. As long as the 454 isn't too torquey the light weight of the car will make it very reliable.

You'll have to do something about the 6.5" rear axle. It sometimes blew up behind the stock 90-hp 4-banger.

Re: 454 in a Chevette?

I had an old mag article where 454/chevette were together. I thought they did a horrible job, dude didnt even have a place to sit.

If i were to attempt something like this, i would start out with a middle 80's s-10 short bed frame. Cut it down farther to match the length of the chevette, build it to handle a big block, and use the chevette "skin" to finish it up. Room wouldnt be a problem as long as you use some strategy when placing the chevette body on the frame. Weld up places to mount the body to the frame and if you get the body off the ground another foot or so, you could just about hide the frame ect with a body kit for a similar sized car.
