Oh god....
they have cameras in our House of Commons for most of the days when they are in session. For the most part, they are quibbling like school children and making crap un-funny jokes and picking at slips of the tongue during speaches and whatnot instead of actually making any worthwhile comments or forwarding the discussion.

There is currently a bit of fuss over whether or not the Education secretary was right or not in sending her child, who needs specialised teaching due to dislexia, to a private school that could provide it.
WTF?
What annoys the hell out of me is that the first time this was brought up, they spent half an hour talking about her right to choose where to send her child instead of the more important question of why regular mainstream state run schools aren't suitably equiped and the staff there trained?

Re: Minimum-wage increase for everyone exept for Samoa

You know, before the Republicans destroyed the unions and then set their sites on ruining the public education system kids who couldn't get into college could still get decent paying jobs. The unions had apprentice programs that provided training to our youth and skilled tradesmen to our work force. The school system used to have career paths for students that would never go to college to prepare them for trades that pay well also. The need for a better minimum wage is not so much an indictment against the poor as it is an indictment against our political system itself.

Re: Minimum-wage increase for everyone exept for Samoa

Having worked almost 6 years for a unionized company in the past, I can affirmatively state that what I believed for most of my life is true:

Unions have far outlived their useful lives. Back when there was only one factory in town and you either worked there or starved (or were stabbed to death), unions served a legitimate purpose. Now, however, capitalism is equipped to handle the former job of unions on it's own. Poor conditions and/or low pay at company A? Quit and go work for company B C D or E. When company A loses all it's employees, they'll either straighten up or go out of business. Unions are worthless. Between the market and governmental regulations, unions are nothing but a business looking for more reven - I mean dues.
