I've got a 2003 Chevy Silverado that on very cold mornings goes into "reduced engine power" mode on startup. This condition results from the computer detecting that the engine is overheating and the computer alternates cylinder firing to prevent engine damage from the overheat condition. However, overheating is not my problem on startup when it is minus 10 degrees farenheit. Problem is intermittent. Once in this condition the engine wilol not generate more than 1500 rpm with the accelerator to the floor, will not move above 15-20 mph (on flat) and will not climb hills. Typically, if the engine is allowed to warm up for a half hour and then shut down and restarted, it will come out of this condition and operate fine on restart. The engine goes into this condition on startup only on cold mornings below 10 degrees, but I've noticed it also does it as I turn the key but before the engine actually starts. I get an engine caution light and message "Reduced Engine Power". Engine temp guage is operational and cold. Chevy dealer has been unable to solve problem. Anyone got any ideas besides moving south?

if it is still under warranty, i'd just dump it off at the dealer and say "you fix it".

Faulty coolant temp sensor? There are two; one for the gauge and one for the computer. If you put it on the diagnostic box you can read the values coming from the CTS.

swap it for a ford lol
