If you do it yourself, it would cost up to $4,000 even if you paid top dollar for your parts. I'm certain you can do this swap yourself for under $3,000 if you do some research and aren't afraid of a wiring diagram and some fabrication.

To elaborate on my first statement, you're a fool to pay $6,000 for a motor swap into an 84-'87 Civic/CRX. Most people (me included) would rather buy a nice Prelude, AWD DSM, Supra, RX7, MR2 Turbo, or 300ZX TT for the same price. It's just dumb to invest that much money into a 1G/3G. Keep in mind that if you spend $6,000 on a motor swap, you will never get that money back out of the car in a sale. You'd be lucky to get $3,000 for the complete car if you can find the one person in the world that is crazy enough to pay that much for a 1G/3G. Through my experience I found that if someone was going to pay more than $2,000 for a Civic, they'd rather buy an 88+.

I agree. The chassis is way to old to handle any serious power. Get a newer car then work on it.

Neither.. you should start paying attention to the fact that you're going to be spinning your tires all over the place.. and realize what you're trying to do.. this is not a good thing for you to take on if you're not familiar with small lightwieght front wheel drive cars.. you should just take it in stride, keep the car streetable, and put a D16 teg motor in it... no money, except the price of the donor car, and a lil work, you can do the entire swap in less than 4 days, and that includes the disc brake conversion, etc.

it seems to me that the only reason you're interested in doing this swap is so that you can beat your friend's teg... foolish reasoning, if you ask me, but you didn't.

If you take into account the fact that his teg is heavier than your CRX, and your D16 with light mods will easily max out your useful power to weight ratio, you'll realise that you'll be WALKING HIM down the 1/4 mile with no troubles at all... and I'd imagine w/o using full throttle most times.

basically, your car fully equipped never weighed in more than 1800-1900 lbs... so about 180-190 HP would give you a 10:1 power to weight... which is borderline unsafe for a newb on the street... especially if you're not familiar with the car. You should be looking for more something like 160HP and not alot of bottom end... you wanna get the car moving before you start getting into your power band... so you need top-end power... turbo a rebuilt teg motor, you can easily get 160hp that will service your needs, and still get decent gas mileage, and cost A HELL OF ALOT LESS than a B series swap.
