Norton does the job, just not the most efficiently. I run Norton 2005 on my laptop, and I have been saved countless times. It may eat memory like a spoiled hog and slow you down, but your fairly protected....which is why I have kept it. Combine it with a program like Spybot and you shouldn't have any problems.

Re: damn viruses

Having worked for Norton's and McAfee's tech support I can tell you that NEITHER is a good peice of software. They don't cantch viruses, they are written horribly, and they weed themselves into every facet of your system making them hard to remove. They also use up a crapload of resources. Don't waste your money on such crap. I don't even run an anti-virus and I don't get them. You just need to be smart and you don't have to worry about it. Once and a while I'll run BitDefender's free online scan and it works VERY well. If you're going to run one Avast is what I would suggest. AVG used to be alright but isn't very good anymore.

I do not agree with this at all. I work at a computer help desk for a university and the number one propblem students have is preinstalled Norton on the system. Screws up everything ALL THE TIME! I'm with polygon on that it sucks and gets into everywhere and messes everything up. Norton has recently created a removal tool that removes anything Norton or symantec. I use it several times a day and it fixes the problem about 95% of the time. Get it and run it. Just google Norton removal tool.

Re: damn viruses

I agree w/ polygon. Norton and McAffee are infamous resource hogs. At times, they cause more problems than they fix.

I've used AVG, but I stopped using it a while ago, when I went to Avast. I'm on a router, which makes for an excellent hardware firewall, and the Avast has stopped a few hijack attempts from websites.

I run Adaware once in a while, and I found one called Xcleaner that works well in conjunction with Adaware.
