Gauge Cluster Swapping?

Hey guys i went to pick ur part today and i got some little things my car was missing like a fuse panel, plastic pressure clips, chevy emblem for fun, and my sideview mirror that has been broken for too long for a few bucks, gotta love that feelin :P Anyways i have the old gay gauge cluster as u can see in my sig, and i seen some 95-96 cavs/sunfires in there today that had the better ones with a tach and the accurate temp gauge, and it looks the same size cuz its under the same dash as mine, i unhooked one and it had a 12? pin connector into it and one other small 2-3 wire one hooked up to it. I was wondering if it wud be plug and play or if i wud need to rig it for the tach to work? It wud be nice if i cud just swap them and plug and play, or even if it requires a wire or two i can solder.. One prob is the odometer reading, any way to change that manually? Thanks guys..

Re: Gauge Cluster Swapping?

The reason I sent you that is because no one here has tried that swap, thus no one knows if it will work in the pre 00 model cavaliers.

I just performed the cluster swap that is talked of here.... I'm waiting for my theft light to stop blinking so I can take it for a test drive... anyone know another way to get around the theft system? I disconnected the battery for 10 minutes, and now I'm waiting for my theft light to stop blinking, I've pulled the door light fuse, so the doors won't trigger any electronics...so right now it is just sitting there both doors open, hood popped, waiting til the light goes off...the reason i'm trying this is b/c.... http://www.cardomain.com/ride/448390/3

Re: Gauge Cluster Swapping?

hey it worked

I have a 3 spd auto, and a cluster for a 4 spd, lol. It works just fine, it just reads 2 as 3 and 1 as 2....tach works great..... they're all accuarate too. Only downside is the odo was stored in the cluster, not the computer. So now my 96,870 cavalier says it has 141,590.... hmm...

Re: Gauge Cluster Swapping?

Just keep a record of what it was at before the swap and KEEP the old cluster with the previous miles on it, just incase you ever decide to sell the car you'll have some sort of proof.
