Re: What was the best Muscle car build???

all i know is that any muscle car built before there were huge emissions standards is going to be pretty damn fast. a straight six car from pre-emissions days could probably whip an 80's iroc 305 camaro for Gods sake!!! But then again, you can build an S-10 pickup to run 10's in the quarter mile also lol... i think the eighties camaros got no better than 16's or something like that which is just sad

Re: What was the best Muscle car build???

Sorry, but those A-Bombs would leave the dealer and go straight to the track and run 10's.

With regards to the other cars,ya'll are forgetting that you could walk into a dealer and build your car with a pencil. And if that 6 pack Super Bee was sold at Grand Spalding Dodge, you can ber your ass it ran 12s.

Re: What was the best Muscle car build???

Ahh, the GSS with the misleading 396 badging. The extra "S" meant spalding.. It ran 12's, but you couldn't turn very sharp since the headers were in the fender well...

Re: What was the best Muscle car build???

How to compare?......hummmmm.........

How about this:

Check the '50 Fastest Muscle Car List' assembled from the magazine road tests of the mid 60s to early 70s. There is no better measuring tool than to capture the cars as they left the factory to be tested by the Motor Trend, Super Stock and Hot Rod magazines (etc) of the era.

This list was assembled back in November 1984 by 'Popular and Performance Car Review'. They simply researched every car test in every magazine of the era to reach their conclusions. Lumped together all makes, models, styles. Two seaters, pony cars full sized sedans etc etc.

The first ten slots in order are:

1. 1966 Cobra 427 (2 seater) 12.20 @ 118mph....Car and Driver 11/65
2. 1966 Corvette 427 (2 seater) 12.80 @ 112 mph....Car and Driver 11/65
3. 1969 Road Runner 440 6 pack (sedan) 12.91 @ 111.8....Super Stock 6/69
4. 1970 Cuda 426 hemi (pony car) 13.10 @ 107.12....Car Craft 11/69
5. 1970 Chevelle SS 454 (sedan) 13.12 @ 107.01....Car Craft 11/69
6. 1969 Camaro ZL1 (pony car) 13.16 @ 110.21....Hi Perf Cars 6/69
7. 1968 Corvette 427 (2 seater) 13.30 @ 108....Hi Perf Cars 5/68
8. 1970 Road Runner 426 hemi (sedan) 13.34 @ 107.5....Super Stock 12/69
9. 1970 Buick GS Stage 1 455 (sedan) 13.38 @ 105.5....Motor Trend 1/70
10. 1969 Charger 500 426 hemi (sedan) 13.48 @ 109....Hot Rod 2/69

Well, hope this helps answer some questions.

Well, hope this helps answer some questions.

Unfortunately, I question the magazine articles because everywhere I read about them today states that the cars supplied were always tweaked so they could run better numbers. (I wasn't alive then so I can't really say)

I think a more fair approach would be to follow the pure stock drags and see who wins these. These cares are tested to ensure proper engine displacement, cams, etc. I'd think this would be as fair as you can realistically to compare them.
