Still remember you wanting to toss this one as far as you could, at a time...
Good thing you didn't! Looking real good, Mark.

Looking awesome! I love the BAR livery, too. It just looks so cool. Your construction is awesome, I've just gone through the thread. You may mention deficiencies, but I don't see them. Your build is incredible.

Re: F1 - STUDIO27 BAR 006 (1/20) - Progress Pics
Some more quick pointers for those yet to tackle multi-media kits - I'm trying hard to let you all know of the pitfalls I've found, and advise you BEFORE you try your hand on your first resin kit. Those of you who've already done these kits before will probably nod your head sagely and knowingly at all the challenges I'm explaining... hehe
I found on various while metal parts in the kit that after a sand, prime and top coat, after a short while I'd be left with 'pitting' in the paintwork. Kind of like small, minute craters dotted here and there in patches. I finally figured out that I just wasn't preparing the parts will enough, and simply wasn't looking closely enough under VERY good lighting. So as I'm working on the rear wing assembly now, I figured I'd tackle it slightly differently. Quick prime to see where the trouble spots were, and then spread some putty over the offending areas just like you would spread butter over a piece of bread. I'll sand it back soon and reprime, and I'm sure I'll get a great finish on these pieces. Relevant point: work under VERY good lighting, and don't expect the parts will be ready to go as quickly and easily as your regular plastic kit parts like I did. ![]() The front wing turned out to be a lot lower than it should be. A surprising error from Studio27. I didn't pick it unfortunately, so it's going to have to stay. Still it doesn't actually touch the ground, and doesn't detract from the model much at all, so I'm still happy. The wheels have also gone on. I just assumed they'd go on nice and straight, and tightly for that matter, just like a Tamiya kit. Oh how very wrong I was... there's a pin provided to generally keep the wheel in place, but the wheel still wobbles around all over the shop. I ended up using quite a bit of epoxy resin to keep them in place. The rear wheels are perhaps just ever so slightly skewed off being straight, but not enough to notice unless you really study them. A quick snap to see the progress... ![]() Cheers all, Mark P.S. I appreciate all the replies, they're really motivating! Thanks guys... *wipes away tear* |

Re: F1 - STUDIO27 BAR 006 (1/20) - Progress Pics
Hey Mark, your model is looking great.Brilliant job with the decals! The front wing looks fine to me.A quick question for you on the wheel pins.Did you have 2 short pins and 2 long pins in the kit? Which way did you use them? Reason I ask is that the S27 FW16 I'm building at the moment has the same set up.I am assuming the long pins are for the rear wheels and the short pins are for the front, but the instructions don't tell you which way round to use them.I know what you mean about the pitting on the white metal parts I am suffering the same with mine.I've stripped and refinished some of the wing components several times as I've had the pitting effect you describe. It sure makes you appreciate how good a Tamiya kit goes together!!! Regards,

Looks always better with a low wing
![]() For the wheels well they should put some polycaps like tamiya kits, it would be better... Looks great Cap

Re: F1 - STUDIO27 BAR 006 (1/20) - Progress Pics
For those that don't allready know and do it, something to be added to Mark's very good advise (also busy on my 1st MM kit, sadly not quite as nice!) is to use grey primer (I use TS primers) to show any faults. Somebody told me that, I went "Yeah right" and tried it once on this model (usually just use white primer) It shows up imperfections like you won't believe! Even an extra sliver of glue somewhere just pops out incredibly.

Re: F1 - STUDIO27 BAR 006 (1/20) - Progress Pics
Hi all, update time again.
Wheels and steering wheel are finally on, and also the rear wing. One thing I must admit is that rear wings are a real pain in the butt for me. I don't have a Tamiya F1 kit handy, but I recall them having two little prongs for the aerofoil to fit into the rear wing end-plates. In this kit there is only one prong at the leading edge of the aerofoil - so I glued it on, not thinking about the weight of the metal parts. So unfortunately they moved under their own weight a little, dragging epoxy resin all over the place with them...! Doh! Ultimately I got it all cleaned up, but had to use a lot of epoxy to fix it all in place securely again - perhaps my impatience got the better of me, as I always want these things to be finished 'yesterday'. I did try drilling holes down the length of the aerofoil pieces so the glue could 'squidge' into those gaps instead of outside onto the endplates, but this wasn't 100% successful. Anyway, I'm still very happy with the result. Hope you like the pics so far... ![]() ![]() ![]() I practised putting carbon fiber on some of the aero parts here as you can see, simply for the practise. ![]() ![]() Overall I'm really happy with how it's coming out! I'm on the home stretch now, and I'm not sure if I'll post anymore progress shots, but rather skip straight to a completed pictures thread when I'm done in a couple of weeks - keep an eye out for it! stevenoble: I had all four pins the same length actually, odd. I hope you've managed to figure it out. And make sure to post some pics for us when you've completed your build! SeaBee: you know I think I agree with you there. I've found grey primer usually stands inconsistencies out better for me than white. Thanks all, Mark |
