Re: tranny fluid change- how to????

I changed my own a few weeks ago... not too bad. The bolts were surprisingly easy to remove, as 120 ft-lbs isn't actually that tight.

I first imagined it would be harder than it was, and thought about taking it to a shop. Just about everywhere I went, they wanted to do it by dumping some solvent down the tube, then sucking it all (including the ATF fluid, of course) back up with some kind of machine.

All said that did just as good a job (if not better) than removing the pan, and that most mechanics don't remove the pan anymore because they always leak once removed. IMHO, though, re-using the filter just doesn't sound like a good idea.

At any rate, I did the whole job the old fashioned way. The last time I changed transmission fluid was with a friend about 25 years ago -- yet, NO LEAKS, and that's using the new rubber gasket.

I thought they always leaked :\

first, PLEASE tell me you didn't try to tighten to 120 FT-lbs...it's IN-lbs...in other terms 10 ft-lbs

second, not the pans DO NOT always leak if you drop them...i've done three on 65's and none have leaked..

and lastly, yes, change the filter when you change the fluid...it's not worth NOT doing....

Yep -- 120 Ft/lbs. Tightened the nuts all the way to the top of the engine block! No, you're right -- just a brainfart.

Changed the filter too.
