Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.

Did you read the FAQ yet? There is links there that tell you everything you need to know about the 3si platform and more...

I am not going to preach to you given we have all been young and stupid, (as opposed to now where I am older and stupid) but there are 2 fundimental problems if you are a student and getting a VR4:

1) It's expensive to keep running... Lets admit it here, a 3000GT runs pretty reliably as a daily driver when treated nicely, but none of us treat them "nicely"... It's 12 years old and something will break, and on average, something will break once a year. And when something breaks it's not cheap unless you to it yourself and if you do it yourself, unless you have some idea of what you are doing, your car can be more tempermental then a Paris Hilton having a withdrawl and PMS.

2) Oversteer - Lets have a quick physics lesson: High power RWD car + corner + too much speed = car going sideways into curb. This if fun in a parking lot when you have the room... It's not so fun when you mis-judge a turn and a split second later you are going sidways into a pole.
But let me get this straight... You HAVE to learn to control a car that is oversteering. It's not a matter of "don't worry I'm resposible and I know what I am doing". I have driven for 12 years and I still cr*p in my pants when I hit black ice when talking a corner and my car starts to swap ends. But the only way to do this is to have had the car swap ends practice regaining control (or get something that gives you more warning that something bad is about to happen)

Now unless you actually have more mechnical abilities then you are leading on, have really deep pockets and have joined some sort of SCCA sanctioned racing club and therefore have more driving experience then you are leading onto.

And in case you missed my advice about "what questions to ask about buying a 3000GT"... read the FAQ.

Re: shud i buy this VR4!?

Oh, and before I get the hate mail saying that a 3000GT is not RWD... The problem is that any power to a wheel reduces it's traction so my statement was generically if there is power going to the rear wheels.

Re: shud i buy this VR4!?

is that their house in the background?? dayum..

if you're worried about getting scammed i'd set up an appt. with a mechanic up near where he lives and have them look the car over. don't go with one the owner reccomends b/c it may be a friend/relative jus lookin to phuck you over. this isnt gonna be your first car is it?

Re: shud i buy this VR4!?

all the questions you are asking simply reveals that you don't know much at all about these cars. do some research, find the common problems (all cars have them), find how much repairing this can cost, read about maintenance and costs of that as well.

here are some good sites:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3000GT
www.stealth316.com
www.3si.org

seriously, we're not trying to be asses, we're just being realistic. we've all been there, done that, and know these cars from bumper to bumper. take our advice, do some reading, find out more before you buy. there will always be another good deal around the corner, it won't kill you to let this one go.

might i ask, would this be your 1st car? or do you already have a car? if so, what?

i myself am not willing to help someone who cares not to hear our opinions

your parents trusting you with an expensive car doesnt mean you cant kill yourself in a very fast one

Re: shud i buy this VR4!?

^agreed, and if you'd read the "FAQ" and the "Thinking about buying a VR4 for your first car??" threads, you wouldn't need to be asking any of these questions as they have already been answered for you.

I don't care if you're the stig himself, if you are not a well seasoned driver, you can fuck yourself over realy quick; I was about to buy a VR4 this year, becuase I found a great deal on one, but I didn't, becuase I'd rather become a better driver first.

But you know what, maybe you should buy the VR4, becuase if you or the previous owner abused it, (and I can tell you for a fact that the previous owner didn't put on 13Gs and an intercooler swap just for bragging rights... maybe it has something to do with why there's a rebuilt/new engine in the car) you will be knee deep in costs, and other issues and you will learn the lesson that it really isn't a car that should be solicited to a 17 year old.
