Re: Is it better to drive at constant of variable rpm?

Variable RPMs often uses more fuel, constant RPMs is really "easy" on an engine, which is why many people advertise that their car for sale was "highway miles". On the highway though the small variations in RPM aren't really noticable as far as wear on the engine. Its the big changes in load and throttle in city driving that tend to wear faster on things.

Just pointing out the obvious...

But this is why its good to use cruise control as much as possible if you have it. It also can help to save a little gas.

Re: Is it better to drive at constant of variable rpm?

ANother question,

If my car is loaded and im going up a pretty steep hill is it better to always shift into 3rd or second, instead of keeping it in drive all the time. Less stress on tranny or will there be more stress of transmission by changing it from D to 3 while moving ?>

Re: Is it better to drive at constant of variable rpm?

90 percent of tranny wear takes place during the shifts. If you're headed up hill and the tranny keeps hunting back and forth, it will probably prevent wear if you select a lower gear and hold it there for the duration of the hill.

Shifting and having the torque converter be unlocked are the two biggest contributors to heat in a tranny, and heat is a tranny's biggest enemy.

Re: Is it better to drive at constant of variable rpm?

just to point out the physics of accelerating vs constant speed.

F=ma
Force = mass * acceleration

W=F*d
work = force * distance

so when you accelerate you have to exert a force, when done over a distance, this equals work. you also have to fight wind resistance and internal friction.

at a constant speed the only force your car has to produce is the force required to fight wind resistance and internal friction.

as you can see, the force required to go at a constant speed is much less than the force required to accelerate.

if you want a long term reliable use of your transmission just add a tranny cooler
