Spark plugs (easy to do and woudlnt hurt to change anyway)
Change PCV valve? (may help with gas mileage and aid oil consumption)
Clean EACV
Possibly change O2 sensor if old
Change oil to nothing higher than 10W30 (5W30 preferred)
Am i forgetting something?
PS make sure to inspect your plugs after taking them out...

5w30 oil? is that what the owner's manual or a repair manual call for? i've seen 5w30 on shelves at wal-mart and i've always wondered "what on earth would use oil that lightweight?"

so what's the story behind oil? i've always assumed that you MIGHT be able to get away with using 5w30 possibly in canada where it'd get very cold and the oil viscosity would increase. i don't know anybody that uses 5w30, so my knowledge of what you'd use it in and why and when you shouldn't use it are a little fuzzy.

i'll have to look in my repair manual and find out where the pcv valve, eacv, and o2 sensor are and see how much it would cost to replace them all, but i'm sure my fuel milage problem stems more from the engine being 17 years old.

thanks. i'll look up the main relay, coil, and ignitor so i can find them and inspect them. i've had a coil go out on a pickup i owned. this particular nissan truck used 2 spark plugs for every one of its 4 cylinders, and had 2 separate coils for each set of spark plugs. one day one of them just randomly caught on fire. i found another at a junkyard for $10. dealership wanted something like $400 for it. crazy.

What is wrong with 5w30 oil? Honda recomends it, and yes it is written in the manual. It is written on the oil caps of numerous B-series engines. My engine is 18 years old with 165k and i use it- hardly burns anything, runs smooth. 10w30 and 5w30 are pretty much the same except the 5w30 is a little thinner at initial startup. I seriously dont see how you can think 5w30 is garbage, you speak of it as being a fram oil filter. Just curious, if you think 30 weight oil is crap then what do you use in your engine?

you'll notice, never did i use the words "crap," "fram," or "oil filter," nor did i give any opinion reguarding 5w30 oil other than remembering speculating which climates it would work in, because that's the only reason i could think of for using it, because i've never seen anyone use 5w30.

ok, b-series engines, and crx owners manuals. i'll have to check that out when i have time, because, as i've said, my knowledge on the topic is limited.

to answer your question: 10w30 and 10w40 are all i've ever seen used. i'm not arguing either way, i'm stating a fact. i've never seen anyone use anything other than 10w30 or 10w40. it's probably a regional temperature thing.

Re: Miles Per Gallon Loss?

yikes. i'm in a pretty hot area myself. my haynes manual called for 10w30 or 10w40 though.

in fact, it calls for the same stuff for transmission oil.
