that might work, I forgot that the 2.2's have a belt
my 2.4 has a chain

If it is a belt (not 100% sure of that) then i would say for sure it would be stretched (if it is the original belt), and a belt should be changed every 100,000 km.

Ok I just checked and the 2.2 is a chain, but that is not to say that there are no other timing issues that could be causing this problem.

The timing is not a belt on 2000 sunfire, 2.2 l. it is a timing chain. it is self timing,well at least thats what i heard. now is it possable that the chain could have streached or something, i can't really check it out with out taking the power stearing off and the alternator. could a bad coil do this kind of stuff or the fuel pressure regulator.
