Re: I got RAMMED

hey, I got a few questions... maybe I should post a seperate thread or something... but it all happened after the wreck...

after I was hit, the exhaust note sounded different... even that night...
Now I was leaving work last Wed. and a spark plug blew outta the port. I didn't know that's what it was, but the car got really loud and cut-off... I thought head gasket, but it cranked right back up... I was in the middle of traffic, actually slowing down for a light)... and I took the car a/b an 1/8th of a mile, and pulled into a gas station... it cut off... so I called my mother, and had her on the way, I also called my professor and told him I wouldn't be able to make it.
I pop the hood... there was no smoke or anything... but I looked at the backside of the engine and noticed a plug wire hanging... plug still attached... it looked like the plug had been detonating...
(abridged) I replaced it in the parking lot. The car still made noise, I figured since it was only hand tightened it was going to... I get it home and tighten the plug all the way... but still makes that sound... The car runs, but has a terrible idle, is bogs down, runs really rich (exhaust in the form of smoke out the tailpipe, you can smell it while driving or riding behind)... and a loud sound...
last night I turned the car on... and popped the hood... there is no smoke, no oil gushing no gas, nothing... but I reached my hand around thebackside of the engine... and I can feel air coming from the middle spark plug port (or so it seems)... I'm not sure what this is... I thought maybe I had blown the exhaust manifold gasket, but I doubt that would make the car run rich, and I doubt that there would be air coming out of the spark plug area... someone suggested head gasket... it sounds like it could be, but the car still runs??? can u blow the gasket on one or two cylinders???...
BTW, my car sounds like it has a freakin' 8 in it now, aside from all that ticking...
What to do???

Re: I got RAMMED

oh, and also... it feels like the car might be jumping timing some... it will get off and then back on... but it was a SOHC, so I wasn't worried a/b it until now.. could this be a possibility?

Re: I got RAMMED

i had a 4cyl blow a head gasket and still run...with almost exactly those symptoms. As far as air coming from the plug port, i dont know. You gotta get in there to do the gasket anyways, so check it out. Maybe the plugs not tight enough of maybe its stripped???

Re: I got RAMMED

another thought. have you checked your exhaust over for breaks? if he slammed you that hard it may be broken anywhere from where the manifold bolts to the head, all the way down to the muffler.

Re: I got RAMMED

no I haven't checked the exhaust... I've looked underneath the car, it looks fine... but this is right on the backside of the engine so it seems... I don't really feel like throwing too much time into the car... nor money... as it's a/b to be totalled... I was just wondering if anyone could tell me pretty much for sure... and if there were any quick fixes... plus 8MPG sucks

Re: I got RAMMED

Well an exhaust leak would make your car sound louder (I've had 2) also if it is near any o2 sensors, it could be causing some of hte idling/running rich issues. Air could be escaping unmetered or causing excess turbulence...anything like that could screw up the o2 sensor readings and throw the ECU into a 'constantly compensating' mode. I'd check under the car for exhaust leaks. Half the time you can actually see the exhaust rippling out if you have enough light.

Re: I got RAMMED

I may do some of that this weekend, I've just been really stretched for cash, so I've been working a second job on the weekends... and college... no time for it all... I'll check it though, hopefully it's nothing but a rear exhaust manifold gasket or something... but I doubt it... the air is coming from around the spark plug ports, but oddly enough, the middle plug, I blew the one next to it... so I'm not really sure at this point...
