Re: How do I disconnect the fan...there's more

wright i just thought about what you said again....the temp sensor screws into my intake manifold and is right next to the thermostat housing. And it has 2 wires. What do I do then? I understand it works by resistance. So should I just connect the two wires to see if it works? And saying it doesnt what does that mean or what is next in the chain?

Quick: spliced or cut and a new wire is connected?

Re: How do I disconnect the fan...there's more

I don't know these damn words ... there's 2 black/red wires that start from the bottom of the fan.

one wire is still connected to that plastic enclosure of wires and one has been rewired to an aftermarket wire. This aftermarket wire is connected to another red wire with electrical tape, to this module on top of the intake manifold but to the left of it. It has surrounding shorter red wires with blue connectors. It can't be any simpler than that unless I had pictures, which I can get tomorrow morning.

Re: How do I disconnect the fan...there's more

Part of it was spliced, the aftermarket wire to the red wire, but one of the black fan wires must have been cut when they attached the aftermarket wire to it(with electrical tape).

I didn't know what splice meant, honestly

pics would definetly help.

So im thinking everything works except the temp sensor. I did just replace it 3 days ago but it didnt work. I unplug the sensor and the fan turned on as soon as I started the car. But so did the SES light... So I guess I got a dud sensor... I hope....

Re: How do I disconnect the fan...there's more

Sorry guys, I do go home for the evening

92Z maybe I misworded myself, you have 3 players in your picture, the CTS, the coolant temp sensor on your manifold, that is for the ECM to know what the temp is (for fuel trim). You also have the guage sending unit between 1 and 3 so you can see engine temp on the cluster. AND, you have a fan switch inbetween 6 and 8. Hope that cleans things up a bit for ya.

quicksilver, the aftermarket module your talking about would leave me to believe that is a 'total fan control' system. spliced meant they cut the wires out of the original wiring harness as you have already found. at this point you may want to find yourself a factory wiring diagram with the color layouts to trace which wires are to be properly connected. Although, if I may, some of those aftermarked fan systems are quite nice and keep the engine at much saner operating levels than GM had had in mind, remember that the fan(s) are called to kick on until about 235* which is too close for comfort for me, so I will be installing an adjustable unit myself this spring. Do you see any dials on that 'module' or anything? Some aren't adjustable so you might have one that's not. Also since it's on the firewall i then assume you fan relays are there as well?

Quick's Got Pix

alright, here's the wiring harness you're talking about

and here's where one wire was cut and the aftermarket wire is taped onto

It all ends up here, spliced in the red wire, against the firewall

s'okay, we all need to sleep sometime, I over slept this morning and I know why (playing video games, not drugs), atleast it was still light out

Re: How do I disconnect the fan...there's more

......crap.....well then that explains why my replacement sensor didnt do anything. Cool now ill get a new switch. Hopefully that will take care of my problem.

Another question. On jegs they show a pic of the jet low temp switch. Its got the part that screws into the head and then a black harness and connector. Whats the harness and connector? Why not just the temp sensor switch?

fixed the wiring, but I don't have power to see if it works yet. When the car got hit, the battery probably leaked over the relays and onto the the battery tray(which rotted out ). I was thinking of going with a new stainless steel battery tray from summit and I'll have to replace the 2 fan relays.

I think it's an aftermarket radiator because it has two fans. I still think I got the wires the way they should be now. There's some aftermarket crimpers on the RED wires by the distributor but I dare not mess with those. Atleast i fixed the fans.

Yeah, I think sulfuric acid will do that, some wires were taped up just because the insulation came off so I retaped those. It's like the House that Jack built

1. Car was hit right by the battery compartment
2. Battery Leaked
3. Relays burned out
4. Engine overheated
5. Guy hotwires the fans BOOYAH!!!!

Well since I don't have a fan switch provision I've been eyeballing one that goes into the rad, or just get creative with one of the older water necks I have laying around that house the CTS on them.

isnt the switch supposed to be on the radiator? I thought it was on the mid-late80s camaros? Mine is in the passenger side head.
