I can't remember, but Vince (Razor) was running low 11s all day, he should be able to tell you his trap speed if you ask.
I think he was pushing somewhere around the 400hp mark, don't if that was crank of wheel hp though.

Iv run a few high hp small displacement cars up to high speed.
Even a Lotus Esprit Turob (2.2L 4cyl) is quite boring once its off the line and into 3rd gear. The engine sounds fantastic of course (turbo blowing through 2 twin throat webbers) but the accleration if very linier and boring.
The car is still acclerating very quickly, but your body adjusts to the constant G force and increasing aerodynmaic and friction forces working to slow the car as its speed increases, along with taller gear ratios all create a much smoother more linier accleration above about 100kph (60mph).

Now you did it, you twisted my tail!
That's only the 210 HP engine, now about 25 years old now, an antique. BTW, you want a linear powerband. Only a Bonneville racer or a retard wants a peaky powerband. Everything being equal, the car is faster around a racetrack that way. Easier to drive.
Anyway, in '89 it got bumped to 265 HP with an intercooler and a real fuel system, a MPFI. Finally reached 300 HP, stock. My '89 has a bigger and more modern turbo than any of these versions, lower restriction exhaust and 50% more boost. It isn't boring when you hit third gear, which I proved to myself again this morning going to work. The sound output isn't fantastic, and it never was for any 910 engine, unless you are easily pleased. Sounds OK for basically an antique 'tho. ;P
That said, I'm still a advocate of the "lots of lazy liters" approach to high performance, except where extra weight would affect the cars handling.
But because my modded engine gets 28+ MPG on the highway and has exemplary drivability, I'll let it stay in the engine bay for little while longer.
Just my .02 worth.

Re: crazy import engines

The car I drove was an early S4 (an 89 I think), which in this part of the world still ran on carbies, and I think was still making around 265hp.
And they were Dellortos, not webbers my mistake there.

I can tell you sound of the carberated 910s is quite differnt to that of the "lesser" fuel injected models.
Iv driven a couple of Excells as well, and they also have a fantastic engine noise. There are a few later, fuel injected S4s here, and they do sound a little flat. They lose the magical intake noise the 16 valves plus carb's creates.

And I still maintian that at WOT the power deleivery was very smooth and linier, right up to 7,000rpm in 5th gear :o

Of course a bigger turbo would make things a lot more exciting!
(but your also making the engine a little more peaky )

Stock carbed turbo cars never made more than 210 HP. None got to the US.
When I got my T3/T4 turbo, I spent the extra coin to get one with a ceramic ball-bearing center section. AiResearch, but with a Turbonetics center section, I think. It spools up very fast and the car has a wide, flat power band, IMO.
Thank the Lord for overtime pay.

Re: crazy import engines

This deffinitly had more than 210hp, those were the last of the S3 Turbos that only had 210hp.

The early US spec cars even with MPFI only had as much hp as the last of the carberated cars thanks to the emissions controls.

The orginal set up spools very quickly, with the sort of Turbo lag that modern turbo charged cars have only just started to achieve. I can only imagine what a more modern turbo must be like, you could almost forget it was there.
