Lower intake, water pump - price?
2000 Montana with 77k miles. Low coolant light comes on intermittently. Dealer ran tests, says pressure tests found leaks at lower intake and water pump. Water pump bearing noisy and shaft worn. Recommend resealing lower intake and replacing water pump. Wants $2000 for this.
First, the coolant light does not always go off if I top off the coolant in the overflow. The light will be off for days and then reappear. There is nothing on the driveway that would indicate leaking. I have read the other posts about the lower intake gasket, so it seems possible but I am looking for a reasonableness test on the dealer's diagnosis and the repair quote. Thanks! |

Re: Lower intake, water pump - price?
Welcome to AF! First of all take it to someone other than a dealer as you will get a much better price on both parts and labor. Second, there was a recent post where another member had his replaced for $1600 and GM paid 50% since this is a known problem with these vans although he only had the gaskets replaced. The parts are cheap the labor is what kills you on these vehicles. See the attached thread for the information:

Re: Lower intake, water pump - price?
I'd run from a dealership that was going to charge $2000. The water pump is $20 aftermarket and pretty easy to change. The LIM should be around $800 to replace the gaskets at a GM dealership. 1/3-1/2 that price usually at independent shops.
