3.73 gear install

So i went to my local ford dealer today and wanted to know how much a final drive gear installation would be. I told them that i was going to provide the gears and ive got the tuner to calibrate the speedo. Well i found out that it will cost $630 to install the gear and take 7 hours is this BS? Should i try and install them myself? If so what would i need and how hard is it to put them in?

Thanks

Re: 3.73 gear install

Thats BS it should be around $550-600 if you didn't have the gears. I would find a good reliable drive train or speed shop in your area and have them do the work that way if something does go wrong they should take care of it.

Re: 3.73 gear install

I would not try to install them, like Corba said, call around and get a better quote.

You might want to find a local Mustang club, that can hook you up with a place to go.

Its runs around $650 total for a IRS cobra here in Austin. Not many places are willing to do work on the IRS.

Strange.... gear install on a Cobra IRS is just like doing it on a solid 8.8

Re: 3.73 gear install

From what I have heard its more of a PIA. Doing suspension work i.e. springs and shocks is a little easier depending on how you do it.

He does I was just saying that its $650 for an IRS here in Austin while you were quoted $600 for a live axel in Tomball.

I just had 3.73 gears and a Monster Motorsports Transmission (AOD) installed on my '91 5.0 LX. Total labor cost was $400 in Western Ky. So far all functions properly. Completely different car!!! Every shift is like a kick in the pants. Keep looking, $630 is probably too high!
