Re: Cheap upgrades for my '89 Civic SI Hatchback

for sure...I just order tein super street dampers and believe me you will never look back at sleeve over strut again...ride is so much better and pretty much the only way to go if you got the money...and for sway bar I would say suspension techniques rear sway bar...also one of the biggest things is put all poly urethane bushings on...time consuming but well worth it...

Re: Cheap upgrades for my '89 Civic SI Hatchback

I'd worry about frame damage before buying racing suspension parts.

I've heard/read that strut bars help with steering which is nice in a manual steering car.

Would a crx si rear sway bar fit on a hatch? Maybe he can find one in a junkyard for cheap.

Spend your financial aid money wisely. Don't indulge too much like I did or you'll be like me and have payments for the next 20 years with graduated interest that almost adds up to the amount borrowed.

Re: Cheap upgrades for my '89 Civic SI Hatchback

You don't need true coilovers for good handling and a good ride, but they are the best choice. You can use H&R lowering springs with Tokico HP struts, that will be about the cheapest good spring & strut setup. Don't be cheap with springs & struts or you will regret it. If you use good coilover sleeves they are not cheaper than lowering springs, Ground Control is the only brand I suggest for sleeves and Koni yellow struts should be used. For the same amount you could get an entry level true coilover setup like Tein. It should be obvious why true coilvers cost so much more, they include high quality springs and struts all designed to function with eachother. Adjustable height springs/coilovers are a pain for normal street use/overkill if you plan on using them for their potential. You WILL need to align the car every time the heights changed, camber kits should be used, and corner weighting should be done every adjustment. Stay way from cheap ebay coilover sleeves!

I use the suspension tech rear sway & it's great, for the front sway all you need is poly bushings no need to upgrade.

Check the suspension forum all this has been covered, but here's a brief order of importance http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...play.php?f=964

TIRE TIRES TIRES!!!!!
ALIGNMENT
Struts
Springs
Rear Sway Bar
Rear Lower Tie Bar
Front Upper Strut Bar
Front Sway Bar
Rear Upper Strut Bar
Front Lower Tie bar

CRX sway bars would fit but they are tiny compared to what the aftermarket offers.

If the frame is messed up I wouldn't spend a dime on the car, time to find something else.
