Cheap upgrades for my '89 Civic SI Hatchback

Hey guys its my first thread and from looking aroudn this seems to be the best forum out there for 4th gen civic ok well anyways heres my questions:

I have a 2 door civic hatchback SI 1989 - i already put a cold air intake - well my cousin showed me how to put it on (was my first time).

Im only 17 and obviously a noob to this sooooo I just want some opinions of cheap upgrades I.E. Cold Air Intake Aprx. 5HP - Remove A.C. Belt etc. You get the idea. oh yeah and dont forget to tell me approx price and if u know a place that sells the item for cheap. Umm i think that will be it - if u guys need like engine info or anything or pix i will have that soon - i just registered and need to go to youth group so i will put that stuff up later - ok welllll.... thanks for all the help! And if u can try to stick with simple upgrades for now - then when i have all of those bolted and screwed on ill start thinking about more complex stuff.

edit: i heard these cars are supposed to come with VTEC well anyways mine doesnt so yeah.

Hey welcome to the forum. You might want to check out www.honda-tech.com also. They have a very nice 4th gen forum.

Our 88-91 Civics/Crx's didn't come with v-tec in the US. What kind of goals are you looking for the car? If your just looking for some cheap HP for a little pep I would recommend a D16Y8 head swap (which will raise your comp to about 10.5:1 I believe), header, and a nice exhaust setup.

On the other hand if you want quite a bit more power you could invest in a "junkyard turbo" setup. I have seen people put decent kits together for $500.

Like I said what are your goals for the car. Also how many miles are on your engine, this would be the basis for my decissions at the moment.

Re: Cheap upgrades for my '89 Civic SI Hatchback

simple upgrades...suspension...strut towers...all 4 can be had bor about $40 or about $10-$15 each for the ebay brands...good start to stiffen your car...but nothing's really chep to do...did you take out your air box when you did your cai or was it a short ram intake that you got?

You want to start with the basics, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and headers as well as exhaust. Keep in mind more air flowing through more power, which leads to a faster car

No need to quote the whole post in the third reply. Also out cars use a header, not headers. One other thing is I wouldn't give performance advice if I had two post telling people you don't know if you need a ECU, MFU, PCM.

Re: Re: Cheap upgrades for my '89 Civic SI Hatchback

Don't use $15 ebay junk strut & tie bars they do NOTHING, they are for looks only.

Removing an AC belt will free up barely anything, best off leaving the AC off if you want that additional 0.25HP.

You could start by answering the first replies advice - what are your goals?

No man I think you are missing the point. As far as electric systems is concerned I am clueless, but when in comes to performance parts, and dyno results, not just what people think their hp is but what is it really, cold air, headers, cat back exhaust. It is proven that you can get gains of anywhere from 13-18hp. It a proven fact on your car.

Ahmm...you state that as far as electric systems is concerned you are clueless, yet you recommend spark plug and spark plug wires. Those are part of the electrical system last time I checked. As far as claiming you know all about performance parts and dyno results, I doubt it, you don't even know what a ecu is.

I know what the ECU is I just didn't understand what the PCM was, and how hard is it to put a spark plug in, and wires oppose to figuring out the electrical disorder in your car. Listen you don't have to be a smart ass,I have dyno test that prove taking off your AC belt is not much. Even with cold air intake you get more gains then removing the AC belt, but if you added headers and exhaust you will notice less back pressure and more gains. I thing is for sure the engine is like an air pump like I said. The more and colder air the faster the car is. When I don't know I am the first to admit, but when it comes to things I have personaly done, I know what I am saying is true.

Look man not trying to start something. I had already stated header and exhaust in the frist post. There was no point in you re-posting it. Just let it be till he post his goals.
