Re: full exaust upgrade today an all i can say is wow

Actually open exhaust on a turbocharged engine is quieter than on a naturally asperated engine. But I love the whirring sound of an open downpipe off of a turbocharger.haha Makes people look at your car like its a UFO or something.

Re: full exaust upgrade today an all i can say is wow

yeah the whirring sound was pretty loud... but we're having problems with the damn thing, i think the return oil line is kinked and its forcing oil past the bushings in the turbo, it smokes like hell. it was sputtering if givin much gas on the way home from the exhaust shop too, but i think the computer needed some time to adjust because about ten minutes later we were revving it just fine in neutral.

Re: full exaust upgrade today an all i can say is wow

Sounds like you need some information feedback. AKA wideband and timing readouts.

Fix the kinked oil line ASAP. The seals are going to be shot in no time. Turbos like a lot of fresh oil. You are trapping whipped cream looking oil in there so it is heating up past the point of viscosity. Not good. NTM forcing some of it out the turbine and prolly compressor side. Def get it fixed ASAP. You may need a restrictor as well. -->Click here<-- What size feed line are you using?

Re: full exaust upgrade today an all i can say is wow

i think the feed is 1/4" and the outfeed is 1/2". im not the one who installed it tho so im not positive, my brother did. but we arent going to drive it until we fix the kink, where it dump the oil back into the pan its right next to something and its choking it off causing backpressure in the oil line, we just drove it about a 1/2 mile from the exhaust shop to our house and it started smokin pretty bad... not to mention its running rich. not sputtering anymore tho, i think my earlier assesment on that was right. im pretty sure we already have a 1/8" restrictor on it, not the one in that link you gave me, but theres one on there. its welded on an aluminum flange instead and bolts onto the top of the turbo. its a garret T3.

now how do i go about getting wideband and timing readouts. this is my first time doing this so im not sure.

edit- thanks for the feedback too.

Re: full exaust upgrade today an all i can say is wow

Well you need an wideband o2 sensor, and some sort of datalogging equipment so you can monitor your o2 and timing readings.

Please tell me you guys are montoring something and not just boosting in the dark...

Re: full exaust upgrade today an all i can say is wow

1/4" is too big. 3/16" ID is about as large as you can go and not run a restrictor. The line acts as a restrictor. And restrictor size should be ~.060".

Drain needs to be 5/8" at the smallest and ensure that it does drain above oil level in the pan. IF it is below the oil level, oil will back up in the drain line causing seal failures as well.

You can either go to a dyno and have them give you a wideband reading. While you are there, you can use a timing light to view timing under WOT and adjust accordingly.

or....

Buy a wideband. This is the one I have -->Click here<-- I don't know what this turbo is on, but there are typically units for sale that plug into a consult port. On 240sx's, we use MDM Techtoms, Apexi Multicheckers, Nissan CONSULT, and numerous others. So I'd search on the web for one. They give timing, water temp, and a lot of other stuff.

Yea you guys have to at least have a boost gauge right?

Re: full exaust upgrade today an all i can say is wow

a friend has an uber raged out Izuzu Pup (the pick up) and it had no exaust on it, running right out of the headers, it was so loud we convinced some drunk idiot who would run nitros into his engine at idle in neutral that it has a 5.7l Vortec in it...
but it still wasnt as loud as my old 8hp brigs with higher comrpession pistons and advaned timing running on a 93octane/alcohol mix with no muffler or header...right out of the block...shot some uber nice blue flames at night on deceleration (i need to stop saying uber...once agian, damn thoes norcal kids)

Re: full exaust upgrade today an all i can say is wow

try taking off the exhaust manifold and running it.

Sure, you'll burn up the valves...but that loud.

Or, pull a spark plug out.. and start it... now THATS loud.

or do both and burn the unburned fule coming from the sparkplugs with the flames coming from the lack of a manifold...
