there should be 4 marks on the crank pully, one to indicate 0* BTDC, one to indicate 16* (i think) which is where it should be, and on on either side of it to indicat +/- 2* which is the safe operating range.

Right, the crank is set to a static 16 degree + 2 BTDC at idle. All marks should be lined up, crank, and the cam pulley, then minor changes should be made through the distributor. If the light, or BTDC isn't set right, it will read wrong.

We adjusted the timing by rotating the distributor and it was spot on.
Got to be a carbon problem or a lean lack of fuel concern.

did you jump the service connector before checking it?
