Re: which gas company is good?

Correction on the Denver octane. We have 85, 87, 91. Crazy to hear other areas start at 93.

Thats us aussies. I only run 98 from our major fuel stations which are BP, Mobil and Shell (which i will only use if one of the other ones are not close) There is also Caltex which is 97 thats good too. I like Mobil and Caltex my self i use them mostly, just seems to run better.
All the other fuel stations (none of the above) run 95 as premium.

Re: which gas company is good?

OK gang: School's in session. Octane is NOT the telling factor in gasoline.Controlling the flame front IS.As the fuel burns in your cylinder, it starts at the spark tip & goes out. But not in a round circle like you would think. Many factors come into play here and engineers have determined several ways to improve our little piston's explosion. The valve train affects the flame front. So does the top ring on the piston. So does the angle of the spark plug. Heat plays a factor in determining the burn speed. Did you know that regular gas has more explosive power than premium? They add control additives to premium and plus gas to- guess what?- control the flame front's speed of burning to make more even power. Did you know almost every streetbike engine out there today is a HEMI? Did you know that compression ratios used today on a streetbike were considered drag racing ratios just 5 years ago? I could go on with more fascinating tidbits but for a street engine the #1 thing to avoid is the deadly sound of engine pinging. You know that sound. BBs in a tin can. Little kid's rattle. Marbles on a plate. To see if the gas you buy is doing it's job, here is the tried and true test of any engine: Run up to 30 MPH. Put your bike in 4th gear (not 6th if you have it) open the throttle and speed up. Don't whack it open but push it good. Listen for that nasty sound. If it pulls smooth and quiet your gas is good enough to run real well on the street. You won't get a rush of power this way but you will know for sure your gas is not setting you up for a trip to the repair shop. As a final note Motorcyclist Magazine ran a test a while back of the major brands of gas to see the effects of different brands. Believe it or not, cars don't seem too affected by brands but bikes do. The top 3 were= Mobil,Chevron and Shell. Mobil produced the least amount of heat-great for motorcycles. Chevron had the best looking spark plugs after the test which showed the cleanest controlled burn. Shell produced the most heat- to clean emissions parts-but had almost the same power as Chevron. Try these yourself and find out. I've owned more bikes than I can remember and the ping test will save you a lot of trouble and get some peace of mind at the same time. PS: NEVER run aviation fuel in your bike. It will eat your valves right up! I've seen fools do that at my local racetrack and put a hole in a piston right at the finish line. Toasted a real nice CBR. 'Nuff said.Later
