Salvage Title?

I'm looking at buying a car and apparently it was issued a Salvage title. It was issued in 2002, and the car is a 2001. The current owner says he has only owned the car for 3 days, but everything tested fine on it and it drove and shifted perfect. What exactly does the salvage title mean? Is it risky to buy a car with a salvage title?

Re: Salvage Title?

It depends on the state. Some states a salvage title means that it was totalled by an insurance company and rebuilt. Some states it also includes cars that have been altered beyond an inspectable limit. So, it could mean anything from an accidental zero omitted from an odometer report, or it could mean a completely rebuilt lemon waiting to fall apart. Check with your state's website and see just what a "salvage" title means.
