93 Skylark - hard starts & cuts off randomly

I have a 93 Skylark LE 3.3L v6

I was driving down the road & my car suddenly shuts off with no warning. I got it to crank right back up. Over time it got worse, so I decided to leave it in the driveway. One day I went back out to go somewhere & it wouldn't crank.
I thought it wouldn't start at all any more, but after messing with it some more, it finally cranked up. However after a couple seconds, it cut off. I got it to crank again after a few tries & it stayed cranked for a few minutes & cut off again.
I've gathered from reading other forums/sites, the most likely problem is one of these: ECM, IAC Valve, Fuel Pump.

I just wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem before I start replacing parts.

I also think the ignition is bad, because sometimes my wipers won't work, but I found that if I turn the ignition forward a little, they start to work again. This is what I thought the first problem was originally. Anyway, I can live with this for now, just need to get it to stay cranked!

I've been thinking about buying a code reader also.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Adam

My friend had a similar problem with his 91 grand prix. His car wouldn't start, it ended being the fule pump. He was never driving when it shut down on him though. It could possibly be the fuel pump.

Re: 93 Skylark - hard starts & cuts off randomly

Typically, intermittent stalling is related to the ignition, either the module, or one of the sensors, crank or cam. It is not likely that a code reader will assist unless the SES is on. If the reader allows access to the computer's info, however, it may offer insight into the problem.

Cut of and hard start

I recently purchased a 93 skylark but it had the same problem. I had my mechanic friend look at it and he changed the Ignition control module and all the problem went away. I've heard that this a big problem.
