speed sensor

i noticed when i was under my car that the speedo cable was bolted directly into the tranny and that there was no speed sensor there. i was wondering if theres suppost to be one on a 1987 5.0 5 spd, should i buy one and put it in? there looks like there is a 2 wire plug that would plug right in to a sensor. thanks for the help.

I believe 87 5.0 t-5's didn't come wit V.S.S.

Re: speed sensor

GTStang.....that is rather odd. It might just be the different engines, but I had bought an 87 Mustang that had the V.S.S.....but then again it was an automatic and a 4cyl. Usually the VSS is located at the tailshaft on the speedometer cable itslef. Most new Ford vehicles have it. I mean it it not a real big deal if you have one on an older car, but I would look in a salvage yard or online to see if your car was suppose to have one

Well I will claim total ignorance about 4cyl Mustangs... But I'm 98% sure that the speed density 5.0's don't have a V.S.S. When you go to do a Mass Air conversion it always tells you where to plug it in but there is no V.S.S.. You just buy the sensor and run the wires.

Re: speed sensor

Well the trans are quite different from mine and 5.0. I was looking at an 87 Crown Victoria today just to check something out and it has a VSS....it is a stupid little plastic thing that your speedometer cable slips into, plug the two prong wire into and that is where your gear goes on to the end of that
