Re: auto gear box problem

Welcome to the forum knotty8. The problem is with the apply of the forward clutch in the auto transmission. The clutch piston seal deteriorates due to the finish on the clutch drum. I have the same problem with my 96 JGC 5.2....

I have done a partial ATF change to the chrysler ATF+4 and it has improved the 2-3 shift by about 50%. I will be doing an additional part fluid change to increase the proportion of the +4 in the transmission and see if the improvement continues.

Regardless, I will be removing the transmission this spring/summer and replacing the seals, clutches and upgrading the regulating valve to allow lube flow to the transmission in park.

It is my opinion that all chrysler transmissions would benefit from annual transmission fluid changes (even partial) and the use of the Chrysler spec 7176 +4 ATF fluid. I don't know if the +4 is available in the UK or not.

JD

PS - No, I don't work for Chrysler or own shares in the company.

Check out the thread "cold transmission" about 3 pages in from this one. It explains what I did when I had your problem..here is a link to it I think. Mike
