Re: 1991 camaro rs wont start

ok, well code 12 is normal, at least in most cases. but it sounds like it could POSSIBLY be the Pass Key antitheft system. The wires in the ignition cylender break on a regular basis. if the wires have broken in a way that they make contact when you crank, and then break contact when you let the key back to run, it would do something along the lines of the problem you are having.

Check your spark yet? If you do, make sure spark plug is grounded good before turning motor over to prevent damage to your ignition electronics. Also, my RS distributor wore out around 130k miles. Check yours by pulling dist cap off and wiggling(sp?). If you can fell it move side to side, it is not good. My worn out distributor burned out the ignition module. Got a replacement distributor from a junkyard for $75 plus giving them my old distributor. Got a new lifetime warranty ignition module from AutoZone for around $30.

Re: 1991 camaro rs wont start

ok, first off, how do you know the injectors are fine? are they new? were they individually tested? im just trying to find out what diagnosis has been done.

In regards to a wire or sensor problem, i doubt it very much that its a sensor problem as i cannot off the top of my head think of a sensor that will cut fuel to the engine, except maybe a bad Oil pressure sensor, which is something you might look into.

however what is more liekly is that you have a wire insulation rubthrough on the wireing harness somewhere and a short to ground that is keeping power from reaching the injectors and therefore they are not firing. This is a somewhat tricky task that is best left to those with experience in this feild. It has alot to do with knowing how the system works, and how to test it, but its almost just as much about having gut feelings and knowing where to look. Not all dealerships have good electronic diagnostic guys, but i would suggest trying to find one, and having him check out your wiring harness for you.

Re: 1991 camaro rs wont start

Dont know if you got it started or not ... From the list of items you have done I would say your problem is the VAT system. The code 12 you got from your ecm is the first and last code you'll when you ping the OBD1 system or read it with a scanner

Jumped time 180 degrees? I find that very hard to believe. To jump 180 the timing gears would have to be stripped, especially if it was running good before you did your tuneup. What probably happened was someone had the distributor out and put it in 180 out and just reclocked the plug wires to compensate for that, then you change the plug wires and put them on in the "right" order, not knowing the distributor was in wrong and now it won't start.
