Re: ford 9 inch

I have never done this swap myself but from what I gather from this as well as other F-body sites is that its quite a pain to get it all together and that the 12 bolt is much easier with less lose as well even tho the Ford 9 is suppose to be the strongest Rear end set -up to work on our cars. How much power are you pushing tho?. From what I hear you need to have quite a beast to need a Ford 9'. I myself just used a Auburn locker when mine went but I think I am on the verge or destroying my current differential as it is.

Re: ford 9 inch

Are you going to be using a radical cam?. What type of induction system do you have?. The only reason I ask cause your run of the mill 383 doesn't require a Ford 9'.

Re: ford 9 inch

Id go with a ford 8.8". Its strong as hell and quieter and also uses less power than the 9".

Theres a local guy here that builds them to bolt right into 3rd and 4th gens. I checked them out, its a slick setup.

If the guy is using used 8.8's and selling them at a decent price I would say that is an excellent option. If you notice the 87+ Stang guys never make much talk about a Ford 9" cause unless your car is making 700-800+HP or using a ring in pinion in the 4.8+'s range a modified 8.8 will handle your needs.

Most people go wit the 9" cause a new custom 8.8" will cost just as much as the 9" so why wouldn't you?

Re: ford 9 inch

The way it goes is he cuts the tubes off the 8.8 center section and puts the gm tubes on it so it can be mounted into the car with no hassle. He then welds on a bracket for the torque arm. The ring and pinion are a heavy duty version from trucks or vans I forget. The posi and internals though are all new and he uses moser axles I think.

Why are people sooo concerned about the 5% (or so I can't remember the accual number) power loss out of a ford nine inch? you can put the rear end through hell and back and it will outlast the 12 blot by far. Not to mention the fact that you won't need to run C-clip elimanators.

I have put a ford nine inch rearend in a 1989 Turbo Trans Am(same rearend setup.) If you buy the moser nine inch that is setup for F-bodies, it's no different than putting in a 12 bolt/stock rearend. If you are trying to use one directly out of a ford vheicle, good luck.
