Question 318i trans suggestions?

Ok, we picked up an '85 318i and the trans was dying (inputshaft bearing and no reverse). Got a replacement from the boneyard (same thing Getrag 240, no reverse). I promptly researched the transmissions and found out the 240's are junk and may die as early as 15,000miles.
Has anyone a recomendation for another direct replacement trans? I have seen the Metric Mechanics rengineered 240's but a $1500 transmission in a $900 car doesn't make alot of sense. At this point i'm think of doing an auto conversion and selling the car to get a newer model with fewer engineering blunders. Do the automatics hold up well enough to sell the car???? Any feedback would be helpful!

Thanks:flash:
