Re: 3.73 gears in v6

GO show those imports what an american 6 can do to their 4 bangers. Does changing the gear ratio(4.10) really make it accel. that much faster?

The stock gear ratio for 99+ is 3.27's

As far as installing the gears, you need a couple of special tools to check backlash. Doing gears is something you should get trained on, or have someone with lots of experience helping you. If you do the gears wrong, you can chip the ring and pinion. The worse case, a broken chip gets's jammed inbetween the ring and pinion, locking the whore rear end up, which can be very dangerous.

yes.......

a stock 99~00 V6 3.8L mustang makes 220ft-lbs of torque. That torque is multiplied by your rear end ring and pinion ratio. If you take your 220ft-lbs of torque and multiple that by your rear end ratio * 3.27 you will get the power of torque measured at the wheels which is 719.4 rear wheel ft-lbs of torque. (Keep in mind I am not doing the tranny ratio's).
Torque is nothing more than resistance to movement. The more torque you make the easier it is to overcome the resistance of movement.

Let me show you why the 4:10's is such a big deal

this is for a 3.8L 99~00 V6 mustang that makes 220 ft-lbs of torque and 190hp.

3.27*220tq=719.4 ft-lbs of torque
3.43*220tq=754.6 ft-lbs of torque
3.55*220tq=781 ft-lbs of torque
3.73*220tq=820.6 ft-lbs of torque
3.90*220tq=858 ft-lbs of torque
4.10*220tq=902 ft-lbs of torque

190hp*3.27= 621.3 hp at the wheels
190hp*3.43= 651.7 hp at the wheels
190hp*3.55= 674.5 hp at the wheels
190hp*3.73= 708.7 hp at the wheels
190hp*3.90= 741 hp at the wheels
190hp*4.10= 779 hp at the wheels

So as you can see, going to 4.10's nearly adds about 200ft-lbs of rear wheel torque, or basically increasing power to the wheels by about 25%.
That is just like making 275ft-lbs of torque at the crank instead of 220ft-lbs of torque, it's the same effect. Same thing goes with the HP. it's like making 237hp instead of 190hp. It's a big difference.

So now you know how to make a 3.8L compete with a stock 5.0L GT.

When you get your car dynoed, and they ask you the gear ratio and what gear your in. They type that into the computer, and the computer devides the torque measured at the wheels by the gear ratio to determine what is made at the crank. That's the real basic principle to how they figure out how much hp and tq your car makes.

Oh on a side note, the 94-98's V6 mustangs came with 2:73's or 3.08's.
and made 215ft-lbs of torque...

so basically:
215*2.73=586.95 of torque at the wheels
215*3.08=662.2 of torque at the wheels

a 1994 5.0L GT made 285-ft-lbs of torque with 215hp. The gear ratio's was 3.08's or 2.73 ring and pinion.
2.73*215hp=586.95hp at the wheels
3.08*215hp=662.2hp at the wheels

2.73*285torque=778.05 of torque at the wheels
3.08*285torque=877.8 of torque at the wheels

Thanks, I live technical details.

I used to have a massive collection of how too's on my web site, I am currently redoing everything and putting them up on my friends site.

You can go to THIS LINK for some of the tech articles that I am putting up.
