Re: new forum?

True, but if the engine is otherwise stock, I wouldn't reccomend swapping a CAI for a cone filter. I would rather slightly less air than hot air for my engine.

The stock intake isn't entirely restrictive. Its going to start making a noticable difference once you start modifying other aspects of the engine, but on an otherwise stock engine, a cone filter over a standard filter may net you 3-5hp increase if that. Hot air intake over cold air intake is probably going to give you a 5-10hp decrease, maybe more. That and your engine will start detonating (if you've got NA) or the timing will start retarding (if you've got turbo).

First off, the term "Cold/cool air intake" refers to an intake that draws from a source other than through the radiator. The stock intake is very restrictive and draws from a kinda-sorta-not-really "cool" source. The cone isn't a whole lot better when it comes to that, but it does flow a LOT better which is always a good thing.

I don't know where you came up with this. I've NEVER heard anyone say ANYTHING like this regarding ANY car. More airflow is ALWAYS a good thing on the intake side. A K&N cone filter, costing ~$55 or so...not $40, will flow more than our engines will ever need. I don't see how you can say that flowing more air will make your car start detonating. I assume you say this because you'll be flowing more air, which is true...but this air will be read by the MAF sensor just like any other time and the ECU will inject the appropriate fuel...just like any other time. Your car would start detonating if the added air came in behind the MAF sensor where the added airflow would not have been read and the appropriate fuel would not have been added...which in turn would make your A/F ratio lean out...which in turn would make you detonate....but you can open up the intake as much as you want to before the MAF sensor. I've run K&N filters, one flat direct air box replacement on my 86 NA and a 9" cone on my current 86 T, and I've never had any problems with them.

A 9" cone filter will free up 3-5hp and won't give you any troubles. Will be a little over $60 after shipping and tax and all from Jegs.
