here zero, k&n is the only company that i think makes a "open filter" (as in it replaces the airbox) for the z31. http://www.ultimatez.com/shop/index....27&cart=212657 at the bottom of the page.

Yo, Zero...do NOT go buy that K&N "FIPK" thing...major waste of money. Go to Jegs.com and order a 9" universal K&N cone filter. That'll run you about half as much as that "FIPK" crap and it's the same thing minus a pipe. I would give you the exact part number, but I'm not at home right now. If you need ANYTHING at all, please feel free to let me know!

Technically, the stock intake is a CAI. But im assuming you want something that you can brag about to your friends (keeping in mind that CAIs will probably get you about +3 hp increase on their own if you're lucky.).

Tonnes of intake filter kits out there. K&N make a rather expensive kit, but you can just get yourself a generic no-name cone filter and throw a bit of pvc pipe (painted chrome of course) in there and no one is going to know the difference.
Total cost: close to $40.
HP difference: -4hp I'd say. Yes, thats a minus sign.
Put a cone filter in the place of the stock airbox and you've effectively created a hot air intake due to the radiator being directly underneath it. But don't let performance get in the way of looks.

the main thing a cone filter does is let more air come in. with the stock airbox, you have that little inlet of air come in. but with a cone filter, you have the whole surface area of the filter.
