I have a pirated copy of Photoshop 5.5. I absolutely love the program, excellent for editing photographs etc. I am not downing the program, I am simply against PS renderings (I also hate PS "choppers").

Here's the truth. I feel really egotistical and self centred admitting this, but here is why I'm against PS. The only way I am going to make it to any design college, anywhere in the world, is with huge scholarships/sponsorships. My family will never be able to afford such an expensive education. The only way for me to get a sponsorship is to have a good hand. If I can draw really good, I can become a car designer, my lifetime dream. I CAN'T afford Alias, Rhino or whatever. That is why I am personally trying to pretect my only way into the business. I don't want the sketchers to be locked out from spots in the industry to rich Cali boys who got their mommies and daddies to get them into ACCD. They already will have had Alias/Wavefront experience for 5 years, because they could afford it. That's pretty much it.

Alternatively, I'm not calling all of you "rich Cali boys", that's just the label I put on that crowd of people that get what they want.

"Stop crying and get a job". Well buddy, 10K$US a semester is hard to wrok off.


I also like the look of a properly hand rendered piece than a PS rendered one.

Every time new media comes around people try to find a reason to hate on it, i was reading a book on rendering and the old school cats felt the same way about markers! while i will admit that marker rendered renderings for the most part blow away digital stuff, especially with all the nunances, personality, & style that can be seen in it, digital renderings are not going anywhere and from what i have been told it is somewhat of a requirement for car designers.

as i am sure you already know, automotive design is a very competitive field, just about everyone would like to do it. So you can think that you can let the digital thing pass by, but there are so many guys that may have a hand as good as or better than you, so what you should be trying to do is learn as many programs as you can get your hands on and not dismissing them because you can not afford them. some say "a
designer is only as good as his/her tools" and the more tools you have on your tool belt the more you can do.


There is no rule saying you have to to accd (or any other high priced school) to become a car designer, in the end it is going to be your work that will speak for you, and internships/sponsorships (which is why i think accd and other high priced schools grads get many jobs, they get real world type experience from these). So just keep at it, you know, do rendering exercises & blah,blah,blah, you have probably heard this before. And when you look for an industrial/transport design school try to find out about their internships/sponsorships program.

And as bonzelite said there are "ways" to obtain these softwares---some companies even let you download a student version. not everyone has rich parents, some students work their tails off and search all the avenues to buy/get the tools they need in order to succeed.

I understand what your are saying but the whole "rich Cali boys" comment was out of line, hey i am sure if you were a position to give your children what they want in order to acheive a goal you would do the same. (btw i am niether rich or from cali, i am a poor student from illionis)

I know that such resources and skills are almost necessary for deisgners looking for oppurtinuty.

I would personally love to procure a copy of any rendering program, but it simply ISN'T avaliable in my budget. At ALL. I can't download a student version because I do not attend any University/College. If I could get it through a friend, it wouldn't work because my dad wouldn't be able to pay for a computer that would support the program.

ACCD was a simple example. I was just refering to it, because it is seen as one of the best (an entirely different argument). I'd personally love to study at Royal College of Art or a similar college in England. After all, I'd want to end up at Lotus

I have talked to people who are having a hard time decideing which college to go to. They consider it a career dilema because of this. Their uncle is paying for it all though... It just doesn't seem fair.

At the end of it, I am still a 15 year old trying to find a way into a tight business. I'll wait a couple years and see what happens then... I'm really going to shut up now, I feel someone's out to get me today.

Yea i agree with you there. My family doesnt even have good computer or internet connection so i dont really have any options in the digital world. But i dont care.

I dont even plan on being in design so i geuss its none of my buissnes anyways.

no ones after you, check it out, your are 15 you have plenty of time to learn how to use other digital media, photoshop is really all you need at this point, most do not learn how to use the other stuff until later because learning those rendering programs early on is believed to stiffle the design process of young designers (instead of doing many sketch iterations, they end up doing 1 or 2 and then going to the program).

if you decide to go to a design school they will introduce them to you, and you will be able to network with other students that may have programs that you need, so believe me you are not at a disadvantage at this point.

i know a person who is in graphic design, and decided to go to an expensive private school he realy could not afford to go to without grants & large loans. many of the people who go to the school come from "priveledged" backgrounds and he would always talk about how unfair it was that these people parent's would shell out all the dough and he was struggling to get by.

he would complain as if it was somehow their fault that he did not have the things he needed, and i would say what does that have to do with you? so it bothers me when people talk about what they do not have and why they do not have it, instead of what they do have, you know. you obviously have design markers and photoshop they are relatively expensive, should other 15 year old kids without them have something against you because you have them and they do not? it sort of defeatist to think that way, your have not really even started and you already are making excuses for why you will not reach that goal.

i guess my point is neither you or they can control what others have, the only thing you can do is work hard and to the best of your abilities with the tools you have.
