College, believe it or not, gives you the opportunity to get more jobs than you would have available without it. Granted, you are correct, not everyone is meant to go to college, but that doesn't mean it's a waste to go. I don't know how I would get into my field of study as a profession if I didn't have some college (which I will soon be attending, in about 3 weeks). The fact is, maybe YOU aren't fit for college, but that's not to say this kid isn't.

Re: The School System
I know what your saying... but a lot of people go to college just because thats what it seems like they should do, and then end up not needing it at all for what they do or not finishing or whatever...
but like I said some jobs require it or pay better if you have it... but hes 14, he'll forget I said that before hes a junior in highschool

Re: The School System
Well for the most part I have to agree with Speed Racer. The school system today is just giving us information, not teaching us how to use that information. If people were taught how to think, then the US as a whole would certainly be better off
The purpose of going to school has always been about learning how to think. School teaches you what happens under certain influences, however it does not teach you why these things happen under those influences. Just because you know that if you put an electrical current through water to create hydrogen and oxygen does not mean that you can use this information for anything. At my school they never fully explained why this happens. English, no matter how pointless it seems, is an important class. In it you learn how to properly communicate, and it teaches you how to write effectively so that you can adequately explain yourself through literature. Our English classes at this point however do not always teach us what we need to know. Almost anybody who can speak english can form a proper sentence, so sentence diagrams are pretty much useless unless you are planning to go into english studies in college. What they need to teach people is how to properly express themselves through their writings. History in my humble opinion is one of the few classes in High school that should be required all four years. Don't misunderstand that however, because I agree with anyone who says that we focus too much on a certain country, war, and/or time period. History lets us know where our ancestors screwed up, and if we know what they did then hopefully history will not repeat itself. Mathematics is extremely important, and in my experience you use a great deal of what you learn in that class in real life. So as far as math goes just deal with it and come out knowing all that you can. If you dont want to learn advanced calculous then just take a different class. About the debate about college that got started up now, just suck it up and go when you have an opportunity to. College isn't so much about learning anymore as it is about having a name on your resume. By going to college you will have oportunities for better paying jobs, and will ultimately have a happier life.

Re: The School System
I agree with most of you on the whole part about how school teaches you the basics for life and all, but I have also seen the higher truth. They are teaching you to be a worker for the system. NOT a leader, but I can stretch that to the actual teachers who teach outside the system. You are working for the school. My school gets $35 per head that shows up at school, everyday, from the government. The students, working about 7 hour days get no money, but they do get an 'education'. Except the thing that bugs me is the fact that you are forced to go to your 'job'.
I left school at 16 because I disagreed with the system so much, that I hated it with a passion. Its like its own little government under a government. I wasn't going to give them the authority to use MY time to their advantage. I was going to learn what I wanted to learn and work on what I wanted to work and that is that. This is my life. |

It's hard to see in high school, but you are taught a wide range of subjects to broaden your perspective on the world. It's not about memorizin information, it's about learning how to think. I could care less if you remember how to take the second derivative of a curve, but learning the process teaches you how to solve problems and apply knowledge you have accrued to the real world. If you can just stick it out, you will eventually see the light at the end of the tunnel. You will come out better prepared for the working world and, more importantly, life in general, and will not regret having stayed in school. I can promise that.

Re: The School System
Does school teach you how to become a boss? No. As for learning about problem solving, I was the top 2% in the US. and I saw the problem quite clearly.

) and I am sticking it out and I will agree that you are being taught how to work within the system. I also think it is a horrible decission to drop out of highschool... although I don't think I will ever use 75% of what I learn, I know that my chances of getting a job drop big time without a diplomaoh and I still think college is over rated... its just one more way for people to get into debt these days...
