Not for nothing, but I am hispanic and I at one time was upset with spanish language folks as well for not trying to learn the language (English) when communicating in a business environment. My main opinion at that time was this.. If your primary language is anything other than English, by all means feel free to continue using it out side the business environment, at home, with your friends etc, but once you are dealing with a company in a business environement at least try to do it in english, or bring someone that does. That was then, this is now.

Alot of automakers are doing major advertising in spanish markets, knowing the money making potential these groups have and alot of dealerships also have spanish staff. They rather have bilingual employees grabbing this market rather than their competitors. The same goes for any business or government office.

We live in a country that borders a spanish language country, Mexico. Regardless of your feeling on the immigration status or the laws they continue to come in for whatever reasons they deemed necessary. Not only is it Mexicans, but also Cubans (as in your case in Florida), Dominicans, Guatamaleans, Haitans, Brazilians etc etc. These folks end up in certain areas and some due to their status back home (Fidel) are given Residency automatically by the US government. Other groups are given Temporary Protection Status, which allows them to work and live in the US. Most of these folks gather together in certain areas of the country. The cubans for instance stay near the Miami/South Florida area. Therefore when such a large group stay in an area and live there naturally the government, hospitals and the private businesses have interactions with these folks and have to tend to their needs, (besides their money) Therefore most would rather have an employee that knows the language and thus hires the bilingual person over the one that only speakes english.

To quote Yogs, "The needs of the many out way the needs of the few."

Re: Racism! Are You A Bigot?

Okay story behind my reason. I worked in the mall. I was cashing an older hispanic lady out. Needless to see, she only spoke spanish and didn't understand what i was saying. She then proceeds to start yelling at me in spanish in front of a couple other customers and i didn't understand what she was saying. The cashier beside me was bilingual and during certain parts, her eyes would get wide. She finished cashing out the customer for me and told me what she said. It went along the lines that if i work in florida i should know spanish, i a white racist, every four lettered word in the book, and that i sucked

I do not suck

I posted this in another forum recently. A few weeks ago, I went to the DMV to renew my driver's license. While waiting for my name to be called, another person asked me if I could help him look for a Driver's Handbook in English. We searched the whole wall of handbooks and couldn't find one copy in English, many different languages, but no English? I think he had to ask one of the clerks for a special copy in English.

Yep same thing here in NYC, I had to go in a few months ago and a spanish guy asked me to help him find one, but in english. We looked and couldn't find any. I told him why not take one thats in spanish and for some reason he did not want too. We asked the DMV clerk and she said they had ran out of both. Go figure. So it could be that they just simply ran out of them.
