Question 351W into a fox body

how hard/costly/time consuming would it be to jam a 351W or any other carbeurated ford into a fox body mustang? and would their be any down falls such as a constant 'check engine' light on? thanks.

extremely costly... i've got almost 3 grand into my Windsor and i dont' even have the bottom end completely together. time consumption-wise, it depends entirely on how good of a mechanic you are, or your buddies are.

biggest clearance problem is probably between the steering column and the driver-side header. it all depends on your overall setup.

if you're going carbureted, you dont' have to worry about electronics at all, as there's no computer. if you're going injected, then you just have to get your 'puter reprogrammed to not send check engine signals. if you're getting a custom computer made, like i am, it'll be set up that way anyway.

A 351W swap really isn't that hard if you're coming from a 302 car already. If you have a big cown (3+ inches) you can keep the stock mounts, if you want to run a stock hood you can run convert mounts and some low rise intakes, or the HPM 3/4 inch drop solid mounts. I had a 351W with a weiand x-celerator and a 90degree elbow, it cleared a stock hood with the HPM drop solids and a bit of trimming to the hood bracing. If you're uncertain on the parts you need, a lot of companies make swap kits, including headers, mounts, instructions, etc, etc, to get the job done.

Like Boosted said there are many companies selling swap kits for a 351W into a Fox-stang. I used block plates for my 393, not a great idea for a smooth ride but I wasn't exactly concerned about that. So there are a lot of options open to you for getting the engine in there. Just figure out which way suits you best.

As far as how hard it is, it's not much more difficult than putting a 302 motor in with the right motor mounts and headers. It can be as costly and time consuming as you make it depending how you do it.

Re: 351W into a fox body

well after looking up on this more...i decided this is WAY over my head and i was wondering if you could tell me a good idea of how much it would cost for a shop to do my swap? and yeah, it would be a car that had a 302 already. not a 4cyl. and a huge cowl is fine with me.

Re: 351W into a fox body

oh yeah, and carbeurated yes. i don't want fuel injection otherwise i'd have stuck with modding the 302. and i've seen a couple fox bodies with 351Ws and the like already installed...and they're priced quite reasonably..now if i were to buy one of those..what would be the main thing to look for wrong with them? like anything that would make the swap bad. and um..can you put ANY ford crate motor in fox bodies? thanks for all your help!

Man get real... If you have a "393" then you should either learn how to drive or learn how to shift correctly. I have a 1989 ford mustang that had the 302 tossed and a 1971 351 w. I SMOKED my dads 2004 vette.
mustangs cant beat ls1 what ever
