Re: my first car, what should i look out for? (80s)

fuel economy is pretty average on them, but there's always aftermarket parts to make it even better.

yeah best way to improove gas mileage is to keep your foot out of it. but you can also put on better heads that have more efficient chambers, upgrade to better injectors for more fuel atomaziation, more powerful ignition, better air filters and exhaust. that kinda stuff makes the engine have to work less hard, and thus use less fuel, and get better power and mileage.

Re: my first car, what should i look out for? (80s)

Actually, ive owned 2.8's (carb and fuel inj) 305, and 350, and I found the 350TPI to get better fuel economy then the two smaller engines.. They're all pretty close though, and arent as bad as everybod assumes they are.. My Z28 L98 (stock) gets about 26 mpg on the highway, which aint bad...

I think all those cars are way way to expensive!!! Maybe I'm alone here but $7-9,000 for a 3rd Gen F-body!!!!! even with super low miles it is not worth that. You can buy a perfect looking/running 3rd Gen with mods to the hilt already on with that kind of money.

Base engine in the Irocs from 87 to 89 was the LO3 305, in !990 the base engine in the Iroc changed to the LB9 305tpi
The 350 was optional in the Iroc's, until 1991 when they dropped the Iroc, and the Z28 returned.. in 91 and 92, the 305 tpi was still the base engine in the Z28's and the 350 was optional

yea i wouldnt pay that much for a 3rd gen, unless i was a collector or something, you could invest 5 grand more and get a nice 4th gen or 5th gen, but like you said you love the 3rd gen, if you plan on heavly modding the engine you dont need one with low miles but it would be nice, now if your jus gonna drive it and take car of it, it will last a long time and would be worth the money, something in that good of condition and low miles i wouldnt wanna do anything to it

Re: my first car, what should i look out for? (80s)

yeah, well, im hopefully going to check out the 89 in a week or so...its got 40k, askin for $8,000. i figure its been online for a while, ill offer more like $4,000/$5,000 and go from there.

the only modifications i see in the future would be maybe a nice sounding exhause, but this is my first car, so i just want somethin not tooooo powerful and also reliable.

is there anything else you guys can think of to look out for? im just nervous cause ive never gotten a car before.

See $4-5,000 should get you a really nice 3rd Gen Camaro and that is the same price range I would tell some to pay for a nice low mileage Fox-body stang too.

Best thing to do as 89Iroc mentioned.. take it to the professionals and have a buyers check on it.. They'l check everything over, tell you whats good, what should be replaced.. Its well worth the money.. And the printout they give you will be a good starting point in making an offer to buy the car..
