Question BMW 740 Keys

Hi new here
I am buying a 2000 BMW 740IL
There is only one key and I need to get a 2nd plus another spare.
Do the keys have to come from a dealership? I know the remote entry based key would have to come from a dealer. My question is, can I have a locksmith cut a plain key for a spare? Or is there a transponder within the key and ignition?
This is a sweet car, and the only thing missing is the 2nd key!

Re: BMW 740 Keys

The only way you will get a key that can start the car is to order it from a dealer - they actually have to order it from BMWNA. A locksmith might be able to cut you a key to unlock the car but thats about it.

I have a 1998 740I and I got a spare key cut from my original. It cost me all of $20.00. I had a Lexus before this BMW and they also made me a key for it. I had no problems out of either key. I know it is possible, because I have done it twice. Just call around to locksmiths and they should be able to direct you.

It doesn't start the car, but it does unlock the door atleast.

Re: BMW 740 Keys

Bet that 20 bucks seems real expensive now.

No, not really, atleast I can get in the car if I lock my keys out. A locksmith service call is more than $20.00 ya know.
