Unhappy 1991 Blazer 4.3 Oil Leak

Well, I just recieved this car from my grandfather,as a birthday gift. I had just gotten my liscence, and started to drive it fairly frequently, to get the *feel* of the car. After finding slight fixes for older cars, such as the stuck window, from it *never* being rolled down, and its resistance to shift into 4WD, also from never being used, it seemed to be such a great car. At the time it had 144,000 miles on it, and it was still going strong. Then, it started to leak oil. Every 60-75 miles, I have to add some more oil to it. I continue to drive it, as it is my only source of transportation, but this cant be good for it. The oil is leaking from the rear of the engine, but I have yet to spend any length of time underneath it to check where it leaks from. I spent a few minutes looking for an obvious spot, but found none. Also, it leaks oil massively if you let it idle, but while it is off, and after it cools down, the leak slows. It has about 150,000 miles on it now, but maybe a few thousand more, as I cannot go out to check at the time of posting this. (I doubt a few thousand miles would have had any effect on the problem anyways) But, if anyone has *any* ideas, whatsoever, just please reply. The car is dying.. I will check back frequently to answer any questions you may have. Thanks in advance!

if this is a 4x4, 99% of the time its the oil filter adaptor seal....drain oil, drop the adaptor, replace seal

Re: 1991 Blazer 4.3 Oil Leak

Because you say the leak seems to be from the rear of the engine my first thought is rear engine oil seal. But because of the amount of oil that you are loosing I would have to agree with Quaddriver about the adaptor seal. Hopefully it will be a easy fix like the adaptor seal. If it is the rear engine oil seal you will have to remove the engine oil pan (if it's a two piece seal) If it's a one piece you'll have to pull the transmission. Be very careful, loosing that much oil could cause major engine damage or catch fire.

I had not expected a reply so hastily. I thank you guys for the ideas, and I will check those out, as soon as possible. If either of those isnt the problem, I will be sure to reply.

Re: 1991 Blazer 4.3 Oil Leak

I borrowed a book from my dad, a repair manual or something, about fixing all sorts of problems that might arrise on my make/model truck, and amazingly, it shows nothing on this matter. Is there any other sources of information that you obtained this from? I would really appreciate a picture, showing where this is, as the picture in my dad's book only shows one for the 2.8 liter version, and mine is a 4.3 A picture is all that is really needed, but any further information would be appreciated as well.

Re: Re: 1991 Blazer 4.3 Oil Leak

Pop your hood, look to the right, is the oil filter there? If so then you have a remote oil filter, which has two lines that go down to where the oil filter would normaly be. There is an adapter that bolts up to where the filter normaly would be, it could be the seal under the adapter, In my personal expience, having the same symptons, the lines that go the the remote oil filter were leaking, From what im told this is a common thing. The lines cost me like 60 bucks, and were a little tough to get back in.
