Hello everyone, I just purchased a 98 cavalier, its drives fine and looks great, the only problem im having is and oil leak. I noticed it after i smelled some oil burning, i looked under the car and seen some smoke coming from the exhaust joint that smelled like oil. It looks like the oil is dripping from somewhere on the left side of the engine and landing on the joint making it burn the oil when hot. I took the plugs off the sparkplugs and on all the spark plugs there is dry/wet oil, actually the plug all the way to the left is sitting in a small puddle of oil. Now my car is under a 30 day warranty and i am having this check out, but i would like to know what is causeing this problem. Possibly a blown gasket? Im hoping its not to serious, if anyone has any information or insite please leave me a message or e-mail me at [email protected].
thanks -max |

Re: Just purchased a 98 Cavalier, and theres oil on the sparkplugs
Look at your lower main crank pully and your oil pan gasket. The exaust runs close to that. As far as your oil covering the plugs. It could be a lose or bad valve cover gasket. Or, just a messy mic. whould missed the filling tube when they changed the oil on the car and it wound up in the well where the spark pugs are.

Re: Just purchased a 98 Cavalier, and theres oil on the sparkplugs
O, one last thing. check the oil filter. It's located just above the exaust manafold, If the filter is lose it could be dripping down on the exaust which is a big problem if it is lose. Or going back to the messy macanic, If they changed the oil recently on the car and didn't clean off the oil that WILL drip on the exaust it will burn off and give you the problem you are discribing. In anycase get a second macanic to look at it being the first one is a messy one.

since when have they put oil filters above the exhaust manifolds? Maybe on the newer models but the 95-99 all have oil filters in the back of the engine on the intake side <by the firewall>

another thing to look for is oil pressure sending unit when they start to go bad they will leak where the metal connects to the plastic
