Jetta burning oil?

I have a 2001 Jetta GLS that seems to be burning oil. In 2000 miles I've gone through 1.5 quarts. The dealership says this is normal and Volkswagon won't do anything about it. Can anyone tell me if this is true?

How many miles does the car have? When are you adding oil? Where on the dipstick is the level when you add oil? What type of oil are you using?

I have the same problem on my 2000, 1.5 quarts over 1500 miles. No leaks I can see. I also have foam on my oil cap. The car has 40,000 miles, about half highway. Daily drive is 10 miles, 5 days a week. Car runs fine. 1507 miles since oil change, done by dealer. Noticed low oil at same point last oil change durign warmer weather and told by dealer nothing is wrong. Dealer says this is normal because of cold air and oil "mixing" and the oil is being consumed until the car is warm. I have never heard of anything like this. We have had a ton of "minor problems" (gas tank, EGR, windows, brakes) with this car, shy of lemon law by 3 days. I don't trust the car and I am afraid it is going to strand my wife at the side of the road.

Vw is full of s**t. No car should burn oil. I have heard of many people with early mk4s that have 2.0 engines have the same problem. I believe what is happening is that oil is escaping from the piston rings into the combustion chamber and being burned with the fuel. In the long run this will cause damage to the catalytic converter, oxygensensors, and spark plugs to name a few. 2001 corvettes exibited the same problem. I do not know if you can use the lemon law at this point of your ownership. People should let VW have it for this, there is no excuse. I guess the problem is so widespread that they know they cant fix them all. I would guess that people have unloaded these cars on the used car market since vw has not addressed the problem.

Also I should mention that a heavier grade oil might help minimize the loss especially in warm weather when the oil is thin.

Called VW. They are directing our dealer to start an oil log. We are to have the oil checked every week by the dealer for 1000 miles. More than a quart per 1000 then there is a problem. Less than 1 qt per 1000 is normal.

My daughter has a jetta that is burning oil also, the dealer told her that nothing is wrong also, who should she contact at vw?, since she bought the car she has had nothing but problems!!!!!!!!!!!!! and it only has 40000 miles.

Nag the dealer! They are required to document complaints, so have them do a work order and then push for them to track the oil consumption.

HMMMM..... I have a 2000 jetta 2.0L and Have not had any problems with oil consumption, Ive gone 3000 and its still where it should be, but I have heard about this problem alot, Ive also heard that some do it and some don't I guess Im just lucky, knock knock. O shiz I just replaced my airbag, clock spring, fuel line, mass air flow sensor, But she is still running strong, everything was under warranty except fuel line!!! Love the Bora

try a heavier weight oil castrol w30(just 30) this will burn less oil. this helped in my subaru. This sounds like an o-ring problem to me. It is in the pistin if the rings are bad oil will get through to the cylinder.(check your plugs) they will have oil on them. even if its one or two you will burn plenty of oil. jett-n

My daughters 2000 Jetta has burned oil since we bought it used from a dealer. We purchased it with 50,000 miles and it now has 62,000. It is burning two quarts in under 1000 miles.
My mechanic made a face when I told him this. He mentioned rings, of course. Is it worth doing this job? Will it solve the problem for the longer term?

This is very unfortunate-that's all I've heard, everywhere, is how awful the newer VW's are. I would strongly suggest people start complaining to the Attorney General's office. If enough people do it, something will be done-and possibly, if there's every some class action lawsuit, you'd be able to recoup some money-admittedly, probably not for years.

However, there is NO BUSINESS in this country who wants to hear from the attorney general's office, and it may get VW in gear enough for them to start building quality cars again-especially if enough people complain.

There was a time when it was quite normal to get 300,000 or more miles on a VW. Back then, they looked like boxes, but were dependable. Now, they have style, but won't last 100,000 without 1,000's of dollars. Can't they do both-have style AND dependability?

I was saying the same thing in another thread. I just bought a 96 gls and already sunk over 600 in it and i still havent intalled the o2 sensors, which i see is a common thing. However I really havent seen too much with the 97 and under. It seems that thay ave 5 yrs old and younger.

I have a 97 and it is the worse car that I have ever owned. I have had nothing but problems. I have had just about every problem that I have read in all of the postings so far. Volkswagen uses alot of cheap plastic parts that fail. The car was my daughters and I helped her get another car because I was afraid of her getting stranded by this piece of junk.
