318 Air Pump Connections
1988 Chrysler 5th Ave. 318. There are 2 rubber / metal tubes that lead from the air pump on the driver's side. 1 rubber hose goes to the passenger side where it is then hooked to a metal tube (above the exhaust manifold) it then runs back to the convertor. Another rubber hose runs from the pump to the drivers side where it then hooks to a metal tube. This metal tube on the drivers side is broken where is it supposed to hook to ??? I have searched the exhaust system high and low to see where it hooks to and no luck. It makes an annoying noise and I would love to eliminate this noise by re connecting this tube to its proper location. Any ideas where this hooks to? Thanks in advance for any help.

The fitting on the driver's side goes to the rear of the engine, to a T ot Y
pipe, then each end of that is attached to an exhaust mainifold. There is a passage underneath the manifold's exhaust ports that mate up to 1/4" holes in the head, & up into the head's exhaust port. What it does is blows cool air directly onto the exhaust flame, making it burn hotter, ane therefore burning off any traces of unburnt fuel. This is to lower HC & Co1. The fitting on the passenger side goes down to the Catalytic Converter, where cool air is blown into the Cat's element. This is suppoesed to lower NOx. Each fitting left or right has a one-way check valve to keep hot exhaust from backing-up into the hose. They dont work vewry well after so many years. What you hear is a combination of the exhaust escaping, and the pump itself. Mine broke, but I was able to solder it back on, with a piece of copper plumbing tube. Despite what most people think, the Smog pump has very little parasitic draw on the engine (unlike an AC compressor). It doen the most amount of emissions cleaning for the least amount of HP loss. |
