Dual stage MBC on MazdaSpeed Protege..
Alright about two months ago, I helped my bro in law put a hks dualstage manual boost controller on his msp... Putting it on was a little bit of a hassel but in the end it worked out fine.. The hks instructions said..."Turn the first stage 4 turns to increase boost by 1 psi...then 1 full turn after that per psi... So we did as it told and assuming the factory settiing is at 7 psi... we turned it up to 8 on the first stage... Then we went to the second stage.. The second stage is where we want the hp increased.. So we turned it 4 times which increased it one then turned it 3 more times assuming that it would put it up to 10 PSI.. which isn't a ton but it is a significant increase compared to the 7 psi.. factory set..
wELL TO THE POINT... We took it out for a test drive after we installed it.. FIRST STAGE was fine.. then we flipped the switch and second stage was fine, until 3rd gear... I could tell the turbo was winding a lot harder, but didin't think it mattered... (OH YEAH, there's no boost gauge yet...probably would help) in third gear it felt like we hit a wall... The seat belts locked up and the car lunged forward and back....whoa... I thought...So we turned it down and drove home.. it was doing better but,, I think you should be able to turn a t25 up to 10 psi and not have the car explode.. Need to know how to fix this problem.... I know we should get a boost gauge to help out, but what if that aint it...... Peace out.... MSP FAN

Re: Dual stage MBC on MazdaSpeed Protege..
You NEED a boost gauge for this, leave it in the lower stage untill he gets one. What you guys did was hit the air-flow based fuel/spark cut that happens at about 10-11psi, depending on what intake he has. If he is running a CAI, then the cut happens lower. You can NOT rely on this cut to save you from over-boosting, a boost controller should never be added to this car without a gauge.
After you have a gauge you can get a fuel cut defender that will allow you to go higher, but unless you guys have done some serious mods/tuning, I don't reccomend that. You need at least A/F ratio and boost gauges to go above the cut. Wideband o2 sensor, boost gauge, and EGT would be the better way to safely do it. Higher octane fuel and colder plugs are required. Intake, exhaust, and IC would be a good idea as well, at least I and E. Please don't let another MSP go down because of over boosting/bad tuning. I know it's the cheapest way to get power from this thing, but it is not designed for going past 10psi in stock form. Is the car flashed??? If so, it is even more dangerous due to the advanced timing. |

THE wideband 02.. whats the difference between the wideband o2 and the o2 sensor on the speed? Or am I thinking of the Mass airflow sensor? I'm rather new at this all....I know a little. but doesn't everyone..ha I'll definately make sure we put a boost gauge on it before anymore adjusting... Oh yeah....EGT not sure what that stands for? My bro was talking to me about getting a fuel cut defender... But he said they run pretty high,, plus your right,, IF he's not careful things could go bad.. So just a little clear up on the whole thing.. -boost gauge -wideband 02 sensor -and the EGT (not sure what it is) Should relieve some of the problem....Plus he told me that he doesn't really want to go above 10 so having at 10 would do a significant amount of increase.... I think?? Thanks a lot for the help....Please reply.. |

Re: Dual stage MBC on MazdaSpeed Protege..
A wideband o2 sensor is a much more expensive and accurate version of the stock o2 sensor. They run about $350-$600, but are worth it if you are running highly modded. EGT= Exhaust Gas Temp, and is great for letting you know what is going on with your internals, timing. Fuel Cut Defenders are not that expensive, JoeP has one for this car that runs $60.
If he doesn't want to go above 10psi, then he could have A/F gauge, and boost gauge and he would probably be safe. Just consider some colder plugs, NGK makes a copper plug that is better for the msp on upped boost. The product # is BKR7E. Never run anything but the best pump gas you can get in your area. |

Thanks man... He definately doesn't run anything but the 93 oct. at the pumps...They tell you that when you buy the car I guess.. I'll tell him about those plugs.. Once again
Thanks |
