Drew - Cool stuff there!

I can't wait to see your completed Turner GTR. Also, about your F1 GTR road car - are you using a short tailed chassis for that? I assume you are trying to recreate a HDF Kit road car? More info would be appreciated.

Phil-
The GTR that wore #24 at the '95 LeMans race was GTR #02R.

I've been looking for the #25 version of that livery for some time. I don't have a GTR in the '95 Gulf livery yet, and since I plan to add one to my collection I would like it to be the #25 car since it's my favorite number.

As for the 1/12th scale car - either of those numbers is a very good price, especially for the dark gray which seems to be quite rare. I would ask to see it in person before committing to the purchase to see how bad it is. Personally, if it looks good sitting there as a static display, I wouldn't worry about anything else. If it is missing pieces or is badly damaged then I wouldn't buy it for any price.

Hello,

thank you Erik ! I agree for the 1/12th. He told me that the car is beautiful as static. but it is not new I think. There would not be box.

Goodbye

I'm working on my 97 GTR (originally EMKA) - painted it black (looks cool) re-painted the racing rims to be dark silver as I am trying to convert it to #1 at Monza 98... (looks real, should scan photos)... Now biggest problem, as I don't really know how to do it safely, is the rear double lights - they are supposed to be really engraved inside the Longtail rear trunk like you see on Racing Chasis '97 GTR's such as this:

I. How real lights are supposed to be in a Racing GTR (problematic for a UT model)
II. Dark silver rims implemented
III. Note the wheel clearance, almost no space left in the wheel cowling.

IV. I had to press down the nose and lift the part at the wheel arch so it looked like in the photo provided.
V. I noticed Longtails have rear part really slanted, Can't figure out how to correct that in my UT GTR Longtail model.....
VI. Body(trunk) and Wheel clearance in more detail.... Implemented. I took off everything that was holding UT wheels and made my own chasis, much lowered and perfected. I lowered my UT 97 GTR specifically like that in the picture provided.
VII. Implemented this detail (front spoilers [2 on each side] by the intakes), and other detail implemented as well....

Well, it doesn't look like a UT model any longer....heheh, need to make and scan photos upon model completion.

I need to get a new airbrush to paint the TMS F1. It might be awhile.

The GTR road car started out as a Harrods GTR from 1995. I bought it cheaply because it was missing the engine cover and rear wing and the door hinges (typically) were broken off.

I stripped it then repainted it. I was going for the "bare carbon fiber" look but instead it came out like the metallic grey of F1 chassis #69. With the grey GTR wheels it looks pretty good.

I later bought a smashed EMI GTR longtail. I used the engine cover from that (no windows though) but the rear wing is too big for the short tail GTRs. Sourcing a short tail GTR wing will be difficult but I will keep my eyes open. I think it looks good with or without the rear wing.

I also need headlights for it (you and I discussed this already). Then it will be ready for the shelf. I don't mind if the doors don't stay open since it's going to sit high on a shelf anyway. I might just seal them shut. I didn't really have high hopes for this car when I started but it's turned out ok.

LongtailGT®™ - You seem to hae several rare photos of the longtail GTRs. Cool stuff!!! Can you possibly post those two ZERO liveried photos without the markings on them?

= = = = =

drew - I can more than likely help you out with the short tail GTR wing once I find my own Harrods car to play with since I will have an extra one at that point. More than likely I can give you the one on the Harrods GTR, as I'll want to keep the black one on the Franck Muller car which is the base for my own #10R project.

I still haven't received my damaged road car yet. I hope that guy didn't take my money and run.

Hey Peloton,

I've been lurking on these forums for a few months now, and from day one you you have appeared to be the venerable resource on all things F1 (on this board, anyway).

What is your history (if you don't mind me asking)? Are you just another petrolhead who got utterly seduced by the F1 ethos and decided just to keep up with the cars and their travels? Did you or do you have some involvement in the F1 scene beyond that of sheer idolatry (like most of us )?

And, what I'd like to know is, what close encounters have you actually had with F1s? Oh pleaseeeeee, do tell some anecdotes...

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I am utterly curious.

Thanks.

acdsee 6 will make a photo gallery for you, its just a step by step wizard and if you want webspace, go to www.1and1.com i don't know if they still are or not but they were/are offering 500mb web space and 5gb bandwith free for 3 years. NO CATCH AT ALL. Its amazing. i am using it for my site (which at the moment sucks )

Well thanks! I'm honored to hear you say that. I try my best to provide the most accurate and complete information that I can whenever possible.

Gosh - I wish I was more closely involved. I'd sweep the floors at the new McLaren Technology Center if they'd let me just to get closer to the cars and the people who helped make them possible. Unfortunately I doubt that job would pay the bills in a place like England.

I'm really just very passionate about cars, and particularly the McLaren F1. I was first interested when I saw an inaccurare artist's rendering of the McLaren F1 in a Road&Track Specials magazine printed in the early '90s called "Exotic Cars Quarterly". The caption mentioned of a Formula One inspired road car being produced by McLaren, but the drawing had much different lines than the final production car including a canopy style single door which flipped forward if I recall correctly. Of course I followed the debut of the car closely reading as much as I could, but there really wasn't too much information available, just the general stuff that everyone seemed to be saying in the magazines when the car was introduced, and a few little snippets of info every once in a while after that.

Only in the past few years has my interest in being an authority (somewhat) on the F1 grown. I've gathered as much reading material as possible, and also scoured the web for bits and pieces of obscure information. In that process I found this place, and with people like XO-Tech, tvrfreak, drewwtms and others who participate here I've increased my level of knowledge on the cars and the history quite a bit.

Another thing I try to do is directly contact anyone who might have pictures or a story to tell. Everyone who has an experiece with a McLaren F1 seems to have unique pieces of information, or details you won't find elsewhere. I have the ability to catalog some of it in my head, and the rest on paper or in my hard drive to pull from later when needed. Eventually I have aspirations of putting together an actual website to share it all, however the more the collection of photos and information grows, the more monumental that task is going to be. I have lots of great ideas, but not much free time to get the rolling. Plus, I figure once I get it all done, I'll just get a "Cease & Desist" letter from McLaren Cars forcing me to take it down - so it's possible that effort would end up being wasted. They have allowed some websites with less specific info to survive, while some others have vanished from the web like the McLaren F1 Resource.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I am utterly curious.
The only close encounter I've had with an F1 road car is documented in this thread:

World's worst McLaren F1 photos

I've missed a few other opportunities to see F1 road cars, including Jay Leno's which wasn't too far from my house one day (a friend saw it) and the car which was for sale at Newport Autosport for a while - when I finally made the trip down there it was already gone. I'm sure I'll have some more opportunities come my way. In fact, I plan to take a trip to the East Coast next year sometime to see Mr. Selldorff's F1's if that invite still stands.

The only other encounter I've had with McLarens was at the final race of the 1997 FIA GT season at Laguna Seca Raceway. There were 6 long tail F1 GTRs racing there that day, and it was simply magical to see them in person. I was in awe to say the least. If there's one track in the US to see a great race at it's Laguna Seca, and this day was an amazing race with the GT cars lapping that beautiful track. In the end, a CLK-GTR took the win that day (and secured the '97 FIA GT Championship ), but the McLaren's put on a great show that I will never forget. In fact, my friend recently found his photos from that day so I'll try to get the scanned and posted fairly soon.

I'm sure that answers your questions - maybe a little too well - but if you have any others, feel free to ask.

Cool man - bring it on!

Photos of all the GTRs but a few are surprisingly hard to come by - if only digital cameras had become popular sooner.

Thanks in advance for anything you can share!!
