Why do you all rag on VW realiability?

I've owned my 1990 Jetta for 2.5 years now and besides the usual wear and tear I've had no major problems. I resently swapped in a 98 2.0l xflow from a Jetta GT and am over-joyed with this motor.

I am a member of the local VW community here in the PNW and all my dubber friends do not have half the problems you guys post about, I find it kind of strange that you guys have so much trouble.

I also have an 87 Cabby as well.

Here we go!

Hey guys,
I'm new to the forum but I just wanted to vent about my problems. I have a 98 VR6 and I also had an 87 Rabbit GL. The Rabbit had been wrecked so that can speak for itself. On to the 98 VR6 bought new in 98.

1. Cruise control only works when it wants to, and when it does it will shut off by itself.
2. Faulty wiring in mirrors. Dealrership couldnt find a problem, however, after that, there were no more problems.
3. Passenger side window regulator failed
4. Driverside side window regulator failed shortly after passenger side.
5. Passenger side rear window fell down(Broken window bracket)
6. Drivers side rear window fell down(Broken window bracket) 1 year later.
7. Stereo makes a loud thump sometimes when you shut it off and will crackle when you adjust the volume sometimes.
8. Drivers side door molding fell off after 2 years!
9. Passenger side door molding 1 year later.
10. factory Battery dead after 1 1/2 years.
11. Hole in driver side seat from getting in and out after 2 years! My wife is the primary driver, all 125 pounds of her. I drive the car maybe once a week. My 91 Ford Exploerer int. is just now showing signs of wear!
12. Goodyear problem - tires did not hold air. Also worn out after 15000 miles with no heavy driving.
13. Finaly - Only 6 of the 8 speaker bose system installed. The front door speakers were missing. I found this out after owning the car for 2 weeks. I called the dealer and they told me someone must have stollen them. My reply"Gee and they were nice enough to put the door panels back on, that was good of them!".

Well that about covers it. Sorry if I go on too long. I do love the power of the VR6 though. I once towed my fullsize F-150 longbed after a blown clutch and the motor didnt even grunt! Its also fun to drive on curvy roads. Sorry but this is my last VW.

Re: Why do you all rag on VW realiability?

My wife's 97 jetta trek 4 cylinder also has similiar problems.......
1. cruise control works when it wants to.
2. driver side rear door window reg. the plastic clip broke and the window dropped.
3. two of window control buttons on the center consol stopped working.
4. door molding fell off on two doors.
5. a/c leak at fitting.
6. something broke in track of the sun roof on the way to reno in the rain. it was partially open.
7. this the best one. valve guides are leaking oil and it ends up in the air cleaner then into the intake causing engine misfire. and vw won't fess up to it. this happend within the first two years. and my wife doesn't beat her car. it uses a quart of oil every so often. I've had better reliability with my 70 bug.
