governor and top speed, still confused...

Ok. I'm still extremely confused about this whole governor deal. Some people say that US 3000Gt's have them, some people say they don't. I've heard that base model 3000GT's top out at 130, and some say they top out at 145 or even 155 supposedly. Is there any truth to these numbers and are there governor chips in these cars? And if so, how would you go about disabling it.

p.s. on a side note, how much would a decent quality pain job run me? I'm really starting to like red

To my knoledge there is no govener, but everyone else on here says different.

Tha service manual states that fuel cut will occur for 3 reasons, rev limiter at 7300rpm, too much air flow, and when slowing down.

The only thing I can think of is the people that are governed at "160" are actually experiencing fuel cut due to too much air flow. If the engine is pushing through too much air for the fuel system it cuts fuel and the power drops off. In theory this would happen at a given speed because the engine would require a certain amount of air to produce enough power to keep accelerating. If you get a fuel controler it will change how much air the computer sees and you should never hit fuel cut due to air flow again.

A 3000GT VR-4 has a govenor. It will allow the car to get up to 155 mph and then it will shut off. To disable it simply buy a high performance PCM for your car.

Ive had my stock VR4 up to 160, so that throws the 155 thing out the window.

I've had my 94 in ther 160 range as well, but it is also true that the speedometer doesn't read properly when going those kinds of speeds.

The VR4 does not have a governor. It has a rev limiter.
